Texas State Rep. James Talarico just announced his campaign for U.S. Senate raised more than $27 million in the first quarter of 2026 β the largest amount ever raised by a U.S. Senate candidate in the first quarter of an election year.

Can never get over how tawdry the modern Right's view of Western Civilization is; nothing to build, nothing to aspire to, nothing even really to destroy or wage war against, just sullen resentment of their own children and seething hatred of the cities whose economics subsidies their regimes.
My goodness I've missed that meme!!
Maybe I'll try to explain to my 7 yr old that this is the meme I'm thinking of when she puts on her favourite song π€£π€£

Antonio Pigafetta, on the first journey around the world, in 1520, reaches Borneo, and encounters Leaf Insects for the first time.
I swear, this is one of the best books I've ever read!
Hungary election result:
Europe GAIN from Russia
Tisza with 138 seats after almost 90% of the votes counted, supermajority is at 133

After a couple of very difficult weeks that have left me feeling very, very down, the wonderful news from Hungary has given me a little lift that I really needed. A spark of light in the darkness. What a relief!! ππ
Fucking hell Dave! Better give you a quick follow π
Whe I started hearing TACO used in meetings involving real world investors and policymakers I realised that our entire political world is now so excessively online that the global system might truly become irreperably f---ed
Any analysis of strategies and survival prospects of the Orban government needs to take into account the network of systemic corruption it has expanded. Playing this dimension down is reminiscent of analysis that once underestimated crises building up around Yanukovych or Mubarak
So the prospect of EU funds returning under Magyar presumably would be quite attractive to Orban's patronage networks, and that presumably would also be a worry for Orban? Less reason for his people to back him if he loses...reduces his options post-election?
Then Zak will force him to do popular left wing policies, Starmer will take the credit, and he'll somehow end up with a third term π€£π€£
It looks like they will lose some seats, but it's pretty clear that won't be the end of him at this point. Even UK right wingers are sick of the constant changes of PM. Doesn't reflect well on the nation π€·
100%. Plus the media are starting to ask them questions like a normal political party π¬π¬
I mean, just look at the polling data pre and post-Trump for Carney and Albanese! Dead and buried...no point campaigning! Yet here we are π
Starmer - he's stubborn that lad. He was dead and buried a few months ago, but now look. The pretenders just aren't that popular generally, and in a dangerous world people like safe and steady. Reform and Greens won't perform and he'll edge it.
Sanchez first - PP have gone NOWHERE since the last election. Latest polls have PSOE closer than last time. That's after all the scandals you can imagine last summer. Plus Sanchez Iran war position is popular, and the best thing; Alberto Feijoo still PP leader πππ
Just going to throw out this prediction that I've had in my mind for a while now; Sanchez and Starmer both to win their next elections π

Not any more! My 7 yr old is growing up with South Korean music and TV. American soft power is gone with the younger generation.
And, are we just putting "maxxing" on the end of everything from now on? π€·
Yeah, before I listened I really liked them both! Mate, if you haven't tried the explorers podcast, check out the short series on the Burke and Wills expedition across Australia. It's a masterclass in podcasting! π
Uruguay generates nearly 43% of its electricity from wind and solar. In 2010, the share was less than 1%.
Most of the rest if hydro.
Today, Uruguay produces nearly 99% of its electricity from renewable sources.

This has also made a lot of Substack history writing pretty awful. And then there are the 'jokes', which make the Empire Podcast such a tedious listen. Everyone should listen to The Explorers Podcast to learn how to do history properly. It's by far the best history podcast.
True, but they spend more time making unfunny 'jokes' than doing history π¬ The Explorers Podcast absolutely nails it. Modern issues never mentioned once!
They're interviewing a student Doctor on Times Radio, and he very clearly had a few drinks last night π¬ Short sentences...words coming out very slowly π€£π€£
This is an actual post. This is not funny. This is beyond desperate. This is a deeply unwell man who doesnβt belong anywhere near the levers of power. Every member of his cabinet and Congress is complicit in not demanding his removal now.
Just asked the AI co compare rain in Bolton and West of Ireland π―π―
"If you move from Bolton to the west of Ireland, you would likely notice a jump of about 40% to 80% more total rain. While Bolton is a "1,000 mm club" member, the west of Ireland is one of the wettest inhabited places in Europe."
The evangelical church I was brought up in in England was so conservative, all these guys were considered heretics, not Christians at all! (Which is probably true, to be fair)
Didn't you think it was a pretty cold, rainy one this year? Sandra says I can't judge because I've idealised our first year here in my mind as non-stop sunshine from Feb - November π€£π€£ (compared to England though, that's how it felt π€£π€£)
