(meanwhile I was already playing out my early queer feelings at a basement Vampire game like all good 90s larplings but they just thought that was my theatre kid side being extra, so they missed the actual experimentation π)
When I started writing almost all of my stories were 1st person female and my parents were waiting throughout middle and high school for me to Tell Them Something (bless them they weren't upset or mad about it), only to finally break down and ask why and I was just like "I thought it would be fun?"
Great work! I remember a store tournament where my opponent was like "your termies look pretty good except you put blood all over them, just looks messy" and I was like buddy I hear you but every time I let 'em out to play this is how they come back to the house, I don't know what to tell you.
I also like games such as Slugblaster which offer things like bite as a mechanic for "if you can't think of anything now, just go with regular success and here's currency to spend on adding complications later" as that really keeps things moving instead of forcing a setback that feels unnatural.
I feel like well-designed PbtA games are good at this because the mixed success choices are baked into the roll. Like the OG Vampire hypnotism power in Monsterhearts, which gave you a list of 3 results and on a 10+ you got all three, but a 7-9 you picked two and so the options were already there.
I agree that it can be hard to navigate sometimes. I still remember the Fantasy Flight Star Wars RPG sessions where our poor GM had to figure out what a Disastrous Success or a Triumphant Failure looked like with little or no guidance.
This was fantastic. Speaking as a White Wolf writer who started there back in the '90s, oh what a glorious mess that decade was for RPGs. I received no less than 5 separate pitches for adding Highlander to Mind's Eye Theatre larp. Not even legally distinct Highlander, just straight up IP theft.
WE DID IT!
Final hours so it's now or never, Royals! Let's go! :)
