I know you know this and I don't necessarily think you need to talk about it in your videos. That's not really what your channel is about and it's fantastic as is. Just felt like I had to chime in as it's so easy for Canadians (myself included) to fall into this trap. We can and should be better.

Eh I feel like you're falling into the classic (unspoken) Canadian mentality of "it's worse in the US so therefore I don't need to think about it." A lot of Canadian zoning was explicitly racist and housing policy and every time I go back to Vancouver I hear some racist argument about housing.

Only Elon could so swiftly and unequivocally destroy the value of twitter that zuck would feel comfortable saying the word fediverse in the onboarding flow of his competitor

New study of e-bike rebates finds that the average recipient reduced their CO₂ emissions by 12-44 kg/month. That's roughly equivalent to 30-110 miles/month of driving.

Not too shabby!

My dog has diabetes, which I didn't even know was a thing. He's got a glucose monitor on him now. Poor fellow. The vet bills are quickly making me a poor fellow as well.

Actually my favorite might be the “this doesn’t help because capitalism still exists” group

I guess this doesn’t just apply to nimbys though, e.g. I was repeatedly called a liar on Twitter recently for saying that Boston has a garbage problem because apparently some neighborhoods don’t and people refuse to believe that other neighborhoods could be different from theirs

I’m a big fan of the “your life experience doesn’t perfectly match mine so therefore you must be lying” crew

A very good thread about the right's fever dream of America on the brink of destruction, a destruction only they, and Trump, can prevent—and in which anyone who would challenge their leader is an enemy of the people.

yeah, I don't know. I like it as a quick lightweight way to say "hey I saw this. It's good" but I am not an expert here at all.

anyway, point is that even just a couple likes can make a huge difference to new users but platforms don't usually optimize for this. They're just trying to get you to stay on the site for as long as possible which means showing you the most engaging accounts (who don't need any more attention)

Yeah, it was 100% a "rich get richer" situation. Almost impossible to break through the noise as a new account. This is something it seems like tiktok has really done well (though I don't have an account for ✨reasons✨)

After working on the original ranked home timeline, I quit to go to grad school, but I came back a few years later and worked on a project called "Lonely Birds" where we tried to help out people who weren't getting much engagement. Sadly it go rolled into the larger HTL backlog and kinda disappeared

once the normies show up i would love a feed that completely hid anything even slightly related to the top 1% of skeeters. with a big knob you could turn up to increase that percentage, even

I had a mostly working prototype of the settings page and they just told me to throw it out 😭

2 years ago 1 0 0 0

so the original designs for the ranked home timeline at twitter included a settings page where you could tweak it to your liking but there was a massive fight between the "just let the algorithm figure it out" people and design/product. In the end, PM & design quit, TL of the ML team became CEO

One of the biggest mistakes we ever made at Twitter, imo, was failing to quantify producer-value (i.e. how do our changes impact the Tweeter, rather than the viewer). This led to the top 1% of Tweeters receiving over 90% (I think 96%?) of Tweet views/impressions. Hope bksy can avoid this mistake.
