Fifteen juvenile black bellied whistling ducks among bright green leafy ground-covering plants. They hold their heads high, alert and watching. They are mostly brown with gray heads and black bills and dark crown stripes. They are very cute.

The meta story of the (imminent) Yes win in VA is the total inability of Trump to ever look down the game tree. He was apparently unable to comprehend that Democrats would respond to his push to redistrict in GOP-run states

This same pehenenon is also why we are losing a war to Iran.

Mama Canada Goose and two goslings along a small lagoon with lily pads. Dad is standing watch nearby. I watched for 30 minutes or longer hoping for the goslings to appear and they finally showed their heads then waddled away under the watchful eyes of both parents.

Two things can be true:

Congress should pass uniform, national legislation reining in partisan gerrymandering; and

Until that happens, or every state adopts an independent redistricting commission, neither party is going to (or, frankly, should) unilaterally disarm.

1/ I was planning to write the usual “health weather report” this week. But after what happened over the weekend, that didn’t feel right. The U.S. just experienced the deadliest mass shooting in more than two years, and no one is talking about it. But this NEEDS to be talked about🧵

Bloom alert! 💛 BBG’s yellow magnolias are blooming.

BBG is famous in horticultural circles for introducing the yellow-flowering magnolia to the world. These hybrids are often the last bloomers among the Garden’s magnolias. Most of BBG’s other magnolias are finished flowering for the year.

Nice work, at one of my favorite places.
