Text reads: Terry loved music. He travelled regularly to New York to get the latest records. Whilst working as a DJ at Heaven nightclub in London, Terry collapsed. He was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with pneumonia. Although expected to make a full recovery, he died suddenly on 4 July 1982 at the age of 37.
Terry Higgins smiles with a friend. He is wearing a purple tank top. The friend is in a white shirt and a hat, and his is arm around Terry's shoulder. Text reads: By naming the trust after Terry, the founding members (his partner and friends) hoped to personalise and humanise AIDS in a very public way.
We were the first charity in the UK set up to respond to the HIV epidemic and have been at the forefront of the fight ever since.

Panels from the AIDS memorial quilt featuring Terry Higgins' portraits. Text reads: Terry Higgins was the first named person to die from an AIDS-related illness in the UK. Learn more this LGBT+ History Month at tht.org.uk/history
A photo strip of Terry through the years. The first photo is of him as a school boy. The second is of Terry in his Navy uniform as a young man. The second photo is a headshot of Terry with a mod haircut, thick sideburns and clean shaven. The third photo is of Terry slightly older, with shorter hair and a thick moustache. Text reads: Terry was a Welshman born June 10, 1945, in Pembrokeshire. He served in the Royal Navy from 1963 to 1968, aboard many vessels.
White text on a powder blue background reads: After five years of service, Terry felt it was time to leave. Wanting a quick exit, he informed a senior officer he was gay, which was a sacking offence at the time. But after being refused discharge, Terry painted hammer and sickle motifs on the ship and was formally asked to leave.
A panel from the Terry Higgins memorial quilt is displayed. It depicts a rainbow with a curve of leather in front of it. There is an angel with wings flying into the top left hand corner. It quotes Terry's words when he confronted the police: 'How dare you bitches attack my friends.' Text reads: Terry was an activist. During the London Pride March in 1980, Terry saw the police attack a drag queen. He jumped down from his parade float and confronted them with a leather belt in hand.
From small beginnings in a flat in central London, we have grown to become the UK's leading HIV and sexual health charity, and one of the largest in Europe.
If you tested within the window period, the tests may not be able to detect infections that are present.
When using an oral HIV self-test or a fingerprick HIV test like the ones in our clinic, the window period is 90 days.
The window period for our syphilis tests is also 90 days.
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea have a 14 day window period.
This means our tests can only accurately detect these infections from sex you had more than 14 days ago.
An image of a calendar, sticky notes, and stationery. Text asking "When's the right time to do an STI test?" with advice to "Re-test again later" if tested in the window period.
There is a period of time between:
• when someone picks up an infection through sex
• and when our tests can accurately detect it
This is called a 'window period'.
Different STIs can have different window periods.

Purple background with text: "Taking PrEP? Don't forget to test for HIV and STIs regularly." Blue section below says, "Some STIs have no symptoms. The only way to be sure is to test."
PrEP is highly effective against HIV, but it doesn't replace testing.
PrEP doesn't prevent other STIs so it works best when used along with condoms and regular testing.
It's also good to have regular confirmation that you don't have HIV and that the PrEP is working as expected.
We recommend testing at least once a year, so tick something off the 2026 to-do list and book your appointment to visit our clinic.
Bold white text on a bright pink background reads "New year, new you? Start the year right with a full STI screen." Terrence Higgins Trust logo in the top right corner. Bottom text reads "Our clinic reopens 5 January. Book your appointment today."
If you're thinking about new healthy habits to form this year, don't forget to consider your sexual health.
Routine testing is important for maintaining good sexual health as many STIs have no symptoms.
Christmas and New Year opening hours. Our clinic will close from Thursday 25 December, and reopen on Monday 5 January. Book in to see us before our short break at tht.org.uk/Brighton
If you need sexual health services during this period, check the Brighton & Hove Sexual Health and Contraception Service (SHAC) website for their opening hours.
If SHAC is closed and you need PEP, go to A&E at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
Make sure you have enough PrEP and condoms to last you through the festive period.
We'll be pausing our services over Christmas and New Year so if you need any sexual health care or HIV support from us, now is the time to visit.
