For those of you who run lab groups, consider creating a lab handbook if you don’t already have one. Ideally something all members can contribute to with philosophies, policies, procedures, tips, etc! This could be as simple as a shared google doc or something a little fancier. Need a template […]

Announcing {volcalc} version 2.2.0! The {volcalc} #rstats package, a collaboration with @laurameredith.bsky.social, allows estimation of the volatility of compounds using functional group methods.
v2.2.0 now allows temperature specification. Full changelog:

Our group, @cct-datascience.bsky.social, was given 30 days notice to be 100% soft-funded. I'll need to drop to 50% time in May or find more projects in order to keep my job. But more importantly, our group is not sustainable under this model.

Haven't blogged in a little while, here's a new one: "R Version 4.5.0 is Out!"
www.njtierney.com/post/2025/04...
- `install.packages()` is faster
- new datasets! `penguins`, `gait`
- BLAS/LAPACK updates
- My thoughts on reading NEWS files and updating R packages

There was a lot of debate about this, and plenty of good arguments on both sides. The shorter variable names are for more compact code and data display. For those wanting to covert existing scripts to use the #RStats 4.5.0 versions, there’s the new {basepenguins} 📦 ellakaye.github.io/basepenguins
Whimsical illustration featuring a hot air balloon carrying cartoon animals (lion, giraffes, elephant) flying through a starry sky with planets and clouds. The word 'Air' is integrated into the balloon's design. The 'posit' logo is present, and the overall design is contained within a yellow-outlined hexagon on a textured light blue background.
We are thrilled to announce Air, an extremely fast R formatter!
This super speedy tool written in #Rust ensures consistent, readable #RStats code.

Helpful trick for academic writing with #QuartoPub: sometimes when trimming down papers, you've got to remove references (ugh—bibliographies shouldn't count in word counts!) so I use this #rstats snippet to extract all citations & and find things that I've only used once to see if they're droppable
Question for people involved with computational science, #supercomputing, or similar at academic institutions or national labs:
Which do you professionally self-identify as most strongly?
#HPC person?
#RSE person?
Computational scientist?
Other? If so, what?
Hey #rstats! 👋 As part of my first consulting venture, I'm excited to share 2 in-person workshops in Brisbane on April 14 & 15: "Quarto for Scientists" and "R Package Essentials". Bonus: When you sign up, you'll get a free one-hour video consult with me for code review, writing, or data analysis! 🚀💡
UPDATE: Here's where we're at w/ NIH grant terminations:
❌ 429 NIH grants terminated*
❌ 137 related to HIV/AIDS prevention
❌ 27 on cancer
❌ 16 on Alzheimer's
The full Airtable, thanks to wizardry of @noamross.net👇
*This is just what we know. There are certainly more we don't know about yet.
PLEASE KEEP SUBMITTING YOUR TERMINATED GRANTS!
So far, there have been fewer grants terminated this week than last, but the week ain't over. It's *CRITICAL* to advocacy for the public to know what's going on.
We can't do that without you.
Submit your terminated grant info here ⤵️

⚠️WANTED⚠️ Dirty datasets that can be used in training courses! Have you got any great examples of datasets (preferably CC0 or CC-BY) that you think demonstrate some of the key issues with dirty data? I'm interested in teaching how to improve data collection, & about cleaning data once you have it. 📊

I am having a hard time finding literature guidance on how to perform model diagnostics for a nonlinear model with multiplicative errors: Y = aX^b*epsilon. In this case, the residuals should be Y/fitted, with fitted = ahat X^bhat. That’s how far I got. Help! 🤭 #rstats
