The Unnatural History of Bird Flu H5N1 is a human creation

There's been lots of stories about H5N1, but I've yet to see a deep dive into where it came from—which is also the story of how industrial poultry production methods are responsible for turning harmless influenzas into monsters.

These systems are not ancient traditions—they are relatively new, shaped by policy, technology, and economic incentives. Their long-term consequences—on human health, environmental stability, and disease emergence—are still unfolding. What comes next is up to us.

Articles like this are deeply damaging.

By comparing industrial animal agriculture to non-industrial animal agriculture, the writer completely brushes aside the possibility of meat reduction, which is EXACTLY what the meat industry and other climate-damaging industries want us to do.

How did Elphaba become wicked? There’s a hidden message people keep missing. The treatment of animals in the real world is far stranger — and crueler — than in Wicked.

Seen Wicked already, or seeing it this weekend? Let me know if you caught the message that most people end up missing — I wrote about it for @vox.com

Opinion | I Ran Operation Warp Speed. I’m Concerned About Bird Flu. Avian influenza might mutate to enable human-to-human transmission.

"If the virus begins to transmit efficiently among humans, it will be very difficult to contain, according to the Johns Hopkins assessment, and 'the likelihood of a pandemic is very high.'”

We must end all animal agricultural uses of animals immediately.

The House Just Blessed Trump’s Authoritarian Playbook by Passing Nonprofit-Killer Bill Attacking civili society is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes — and the House, including some Democrats, just gave Trump the power to do it.

15 House Dems just voted for HR 9495, which would give Trump power to name any advocacy group or nonprofit as “terrorist affiliated" with no due process.

Senate Dems must not let this attack on free speech come up for a vote during the lame-duck.

If it does, they must vote NO.
