I was interviewed on the “Tehran Toll Booth” and what it means for navigation, security, and international law in the Strait of Hormuz. www.france24.com/fr/info-en-c...
Declaring that no quarter will be given unequivocally violates international humanitarian law. Indeed, ordering that no quarter will be given, threatening an adversary therewith or conducting hostilities on this basis is prohibited and constitutes a war crime.
I spoke with Ukraine’s public broadcaster Suspilne about the legality of the US/Israel use of force against Iran and how international law frames the issue.

If you want to know whether Trump’s tariff threats are a violation of the principle of non-intervention, Chapter 3 of my book might be of interest. It explores what coercion is and whether economic coercion is unlawful under customary int’l law and the OAS Charter

Delighted to be in Toronto to give a presentation on the principle of non-intervention as a balancing mechanism ensuring the co-existence of empires at the conference on Legal Histories of Empire: Empires in Touch #nonintervention
Another stop in the non-intervention tour. In 1968, Wenceslas Square in Prague became a focal point of resistance against the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. After the Prague Spring was suppressed, Brezhnev proclaimed his doctrine of limited sovereignty.
‘The Author’s conclusions are well-supported by a thorough analysis of relevant international practice and scholarly literature. These qualities make the work an essential resource for anyone seeking to grapple with these themes’ Thanks A. Annoni for reviewing my book for Riv. dir. internazionale!
Does international humanitarian law address the problem of poverty resulting from armed conflict? My thoughts just published (in Italian) in the Proceedings of the 2024 Conference of the Italian Society of International Law #ihl #poverty #sdg

Another stop on the #nonintervention tour. The Nyon Agreement was signed on 14 Sept 1937. Nyon was chosen to avoid association with the League of Nations, which was viewed unfavorably by Italy. The agreement addressed attacks on international shipping during the Spanish Civil War
Did you know that, although never formally recognised by the Catholic Church, the monarchs of France, Spain and Austria claimed a jus exclusivae, ie, the right to veto a particular candidate to the papacy? See Chap. 1 of my book #nonintervention #conclave
