We regret to inform you that most of the prairie dogs have died of plague.

No. You just have a fender bike and a no fender bike. Think of all the things less useful in your life than another bike: television, books, walls, dishwasher. You can get by without these things easier than you can get by without n+1 bikes.

High-end apartment builder gets $13M tax exemption from Corvallis It's all part of an incentive to get developers to offer public benefits. But not all City Council members believe the public is getting enough benefit.

Wow, the 14-story development in Corvallis just got approval from the Council for a partial property tax exemption. Still not convinced this is real or it gets built as envisioned, but encouraging that majority of council understands financial imperative for growth.

I don't think we do? There was a lot of agitation toward liberalizing zoning and other requirements several years ago and the City has done that, in conjunction with state level reforms that would have required much of the same. Staff and the majority of Council recognize the financial imperative.

Nevertheless, it won't be the highest anyone has ever BBQed between Sacramento and Portland. I camped on Mary's Peak once and made a rack of lamb for dinner.

I mean it couldn't be much more of a trope. The bullet points opposing it are: parking, neighborhood character, traffic safety, infrastructure (literally gigantic pipes already run through downtown--huge SDC windfall), housing is only for students (only growing demographic), fire ladder too small...

It's especially funny because the only website providing information about it was made by NIMBYs to oppose it, so it's all we have to link to to promote it.

Daylight saving time and motor vehicle crashes: the reduction in pedestrian and vehicle occupant fatalities - PubMed Fatal crashes were tabulated for 6-hour periods around sunrise and sunset, from 13 weeks before the fall change to standard time until 9 weeks after the spring change to daylight saving time. Fatal-crash occurrence was related to changes in daylight, whether these changes occurred abruptly with the …

And here's the original 1995 study that estimated 900 national deaths, overwhelmingly pedestrians and cyclists, that would have been avoided by year-round DST. All findings since have been basically the same, including the above linked 2025 study: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7832269/

Daylight saving time and fatal crashes: the impact of changing light conditions 'Daylight saving time and fatal crashes: the impact of changing light conditions' by Woods, Amber N. / Weast, Rebecca A. / Monfort, Samuel S.

Yes, here's the 2025 study, which found that the increase in pedestrian and cyclists deaths as a result of the fall time change was attributable to decreased lighting. Opposite effect in drivers was just because they're more tired: www.iihs.org/research-are...

Making the case to trade 9 PM summer sunsets for 8 PM sunsets, with the 4 AM summer sunrise as a bonus. Tough row to hoe.

Winter PM rush hour currently happens in pitch black, while morning would still be mostly in the light if on PDT. Safety data heavily in favor of permanent DST for that reason.

Got it, that's helpful. FWIW, I heard from someone in Minneapolis AUSA office that all the JAG lawyers were 1 to 2 years out of law school, so probably on their initial term of service. Didn't sound like an exaggeration.

Are you allowed to quit in the JAG corp? Wouldn't you just be AWOL, or court-martialed for refusing an order? I didn't even think resigning is an option, since these are people on military enlistment and, presumably, military orders.

The bigger question is since she's actually a DHS employee that DOJ is borrowing to support the understaffed AUSA office, did she ever even take any of the same oaths of office that an AUSA would? Did she have the same training?

2 months ago 1 0 0 0

She is not employed by DOJ. She works for DHS as part of OPLA. She was assigned to the AUSA office in DOJ on detail. Very different baseline situation where her work is administrative law that she can probably now return to. She was in over her head but this isn't her job.

Wait, isn't she an ICE attorney assigned to work with the DOJ on detail? The obligations still stand, but I think it's important to recognize this is someone whose experience is in administrative law. Lot of JAGs a year out of law school in that office now who also don't know what they're doing.

This is insane. I remember being in Medford and being mad that they had a two-way contra-flow bike lane on a downtown street and Corvallis still doesn't have any downtown bike lanes!

Is this really what happens to people who get DUII in Oregon? It definitely does not seem like it. We have no jail here in Benton County, so it seems like if you just don't show up for trial they'll let you plead to a misdemeanor reckless driving as long as you pinky promise to show up next time.

" think habitual speeding and reckless driving offenses should be treated with the same kind of seriousness that DUI/DWAI offenses are"

So, diversion program for first offense? Then community service? Then slightly more community service? Unless you have a decent attorney. Then no consequences.

I do a 14 pounder for two people (cure and smoke the breast and slice thin for a month of leftovers). I can spatchcock a chicken in like 3 minutes. Takes me an hour to portion out a turkey. I feel like I need to find the joints to make it possible, I can't cut through almost any bones, shears or no.

I wish someone would tell human drivers that! I think you get my point. Commercial deployment will involve compromise and we're not sure what the limits should be on that. I don't think 'better than a human' should be acceptable. But my 'death penalty for right hooks' idea also gained no traction.

5 months ago 0 0 0 0

Exactly! It's not simple. And there's not even competition yet! I can see it now. The day that revenue will depend on which AV software gives cyclists the least clearance to fall over in the bike lane (required by Oregon law!). At least the AVs will weigh less than an electric F150...

When a human driver is going 10 over the speed limit and kills someone, they're not charged with manslaughter because so is everyone else, so that can't be considered negligent. When a coder deliberately makes a change that kills more people, we'll treat that the same way, as long as AVs kill fewer.

5 months ago 0 0 1 0

Perhaps it's more that it feels like the fight would be over. We've asked and urged that authorities hold irresponsible, distracted, lawbreaking drivers accountable and that hasn't happened. By saying that AVs will kill people, are we also saying that we can't hold human drivers to account?

I think this is an unfortunate case of Traeger trying to shoehorn a recipe that won't work for their product. Chicken should be smoked at 325 MINIMUM. You won't render the fat under the skin otherwise. Spatchcock to avoid overcooking the breast.

Part of the problem here is that the most obvious and efficient form of fitness--riding a bike--has somehow become left-coded. Me, riding around on my $50 bike, in my Ariats, hoping another geriatric POTUS doesn't bend the knee to a Saudi monarch for affordable gas is anti-masculine, apparently.

Jesus christ I just looked at your post history. What a wingnut. We're talking about North America here. House Sparrows have no business being here. Keep your house sparrow propaganda in the Old World where it belongs.
