“It proved an American misstep, fueled by xenophobia, that would forever alter the global balance of power.”
Kathleen Kingsbury, the editor of Times Opinion, tells the cautionary story of a Chinese scientist who was deported from the U.S. during the Cold War.

Diversity is our greatest asset, even if the government disagrees… They not like us! POC in STEM are here to stay.
They tried to rig the game but you can’t fake influence!
Mustard on the [Be][At] bro.
Happy Black History Month!
Reminder: If you're newer-ish to BlueSky and want to find the accounts that a lot of the people you follow, follow, you can go here: bsky-follow-finder.theo.io. Enter your handle and have it analyze. I particularly like the "sort by proportion," which will get a lot of ppl related to your interests.
RCSA has named 16 early career teacher-scholars in chemistry, physics, and astronomy as recipients of its 2025 #CottrellScholar Awards. Each awardee receives $120,000. Congratulations to this distinguished class!
My two most common editorial suggestions for manuscripts I handle are: (i) improve writing style by avoiding exaggerated terms, and (ii) ensure machine learning studies include a repository for reproducibility and reuse of models and data #EditorLife #ChemSky
I've taken a tiny step against facism by making a backup of the Department of Energy (NREL, specifically) Laboratory Analytical Procedure documents that I use periodically at work. I can't promise to track document updates or anything, but at least if these are deleted we'll have something. #ChemSky
Tragic.

Snow days used to be fun! Prepping the lab (and home) for worst case scenario…again. We have this down to an art. #houston
Running - yes, but it has been for a while. I think LLMs etc just made it easier than GUIs already made it. But that doesn’t mean interpreting the results is any easier - and this accessibility could make it more challenging imho. I still see the most basic mistakes.
I made it to #BioSphere2 for the #MateriAlZwinterschool. Thank you @christinabirkel.bsky.social for the invitation. I'm excited to spend the week with talented undergrads from across the country and get to talk about Materials and Chemistry!
Added!
An RSC-branded graphic "Who will you nominate for the PCCP Emerging Investigator Lectureship? Join in - nominate your winner by 5th April 2025"
Since PCCP doesn't have a BlueSky account just yet, I'm promoting some #PCCP content on #ChemSky

Start of another day of #F24MRS and thick snow on the 30th+ floor of my hotel ❄️ Energy levels are somewhat running low at this point of the week and it’s tempting to crawl back into bed and watch the snow fall, but plenty of great science still to come 💪 #KeepGoing #TravellingScientist
The critical elements include gallium, germanium, antimony and ‘superhard materials’ such as diamond, cubic boron nitride and other related materials.

Heading home from #F24MRS where I saw a ton of cool new research (especially in explainable AI) and also learned I’m not cut out for the cold anymore!
Want to work on oxides for power electronics? We have a 3.5 year DPhil (PhD) project on gallium oxide available in our group starting Oct 25 🙌 Do get in touch if you have any questions 💡

This was published a little while ago in @naturechemistry.bsky.social, but has just popped up in my issue e-alert. This is a delightful correspondence about fonts and chemistry; very much appealing to my inner chemistry nerd 🤣 #Chemsky
