Elon completely gutted the moderation team at twitter which started off the issue, then he incentivised bot spam by, 1. letting them get paid via blue checks, and 2. boosting their replies to the top. even if old twitter had the same no. of bots they would be sorted lower as low quality at least!

they may use this site's data to tune the algorithm but the data can really come from anywhere as long as it's varied enough to understand a range of human interests. the foundations of recommendation algorithms like this have existed for many years, i think they're pretty universal across the web.

when people complain about the ethical implications of AI they mean generative AI that can create content based on other people's original works. discovery feed algorithms are not generative and so are not "creating" things, just shuffling original user data around to show to other users.

been on here months (only active the past few weeks though) and this is the first time I feel like it could really take off. as long as they don't self sabotage and keep adding some quality of life stuff that's missing I think they can do it (bookmarking posts would be a nice start)
