Yeah, funnily enough that’s where a lot of meta-progression comes into it: boosting the baseline power level or granting ways to mess with the RNG. Even BoI did that to an extent via character challenges and adding more items to the pool over time, as does Enter the Gungeon!

That said, loads of folks will just restart runs in Enter the Gungeon if they don’t get a perfect seed so if that’s their criticism, they may be misunderstanding where the players are at vs what they were aiming for

Yeah, exactly. And the other part of their criticism you mentioned elsewhere is just the “Roguelike vs Roguelite” debate again, where it’s more a discussion on whether meta-progression helps or hinders the dynamic

I think what they’re trying to touch on is a sense of luck over strategy, which while I think is a misread of both VS and Balatro, isn’t a bad read on the current gen of Roguelikes. The good ones have strong underlying systems to master, the chaff rely on getting broken items to invalidate the game.

Honestly, I think the larger factor here wrt the rhetoric is the idea of breaking with us when the chips were down and the absolute lack of remorse in doing so, less of a critical betrayal and more “why should we see you as anything other than maga?”, imo.

It’s not like we were gunning for right-populists though, and I’m not entirely sure what a center-populist looks like (except maybe a soft libertarian?). So, holding this against left-pops would be the logical conclusion.
