I really miss the anonymity of daily life in NYC, but my worsening sound sensitivity would make it tough without earplugs. And I couldn't afford to live there again anyway, so there's that.

Diagnosed at age 51, five years ago. Re-framing my life thru a new lens is quite the experience. From cringe-inducing social misunderstandings to life-changing decisions taken in the heat of the moment because of sensory overload. I may yet fall thru the cracks in this society and it terrifies me.

Bullies can correctly identify the autistic kids before professionals can. Maybe they should be employed as autism evaluators, the little shits.

Miscommunications, mixed signals through all this "body language" bullshit. NTs are concerned with the *way* you say words and not so much *what* your words actually mean. Btw, you try to force eye contact with me, and I will stare a hole through the windows of your soul into the next room.

The cultural differences are an added dimension and really interesting to me. My childhood culture seemed especially bullying: 1970s in Florida. Kind of like hell, or Lord of the Flies or something. I assumed most children to be cruel to some extent (myself included).

Diagnosed autistic at age 51 here and have been on the receiving end of this many, many times. "The nail that sticks out gets hammered." Combine that with the cruelty of the child bullies of this world. The mechanics of this are depressingly simple. There's not much to dissect, if you ask me.

Congratulations! Getting a diagnosis at 51 was a major milestone for me. It was a relief to finally have a name for what makes me different from most people. The long doctor's report that they give you can be fascinating, cringe-inducing, and ultimately liberating. A great read! 💙

Other kids had cut-out pictures of famous athletes and movie stars in their lockers in high school, but I had one of Tony Thompson! 🥁

Yep. A Cajon is the worst thing to try to get usable sounds out of, too. It was brilliant marketing to give a wooden box a name and then tell a dubious backstory to make it seem like a real instrument. Just give the drummer the night off. We don't wanna be associated with your crappy ballads anyway.
