Ian Watson wrote the first Warhammer 40,000 novels I ever read, the Jaq Draco Inquisitor trilogy in the early 90s.

Say what you want about certain elements of them - I have - but if you want a real handle on exactly how utterly batshit 40k should be, I think you can do no better.

Very sorry to hear about the passing of Ian Watson.
I think for many of us of a certain age his imagination & prose lit the torch for a lifelong love of the 40k universe.

A remarkable sci-fi writer outside of the GW books too.
I will have a drink in his memory this evening.
