Before and after satellite imagery of the landslide this morning at Nizhny Ubekimakhi in Russia. Note the impounded lake on the east side of the landslide block, which is about 1 km wide. @planet.com @davepetley.bsky.social @glacierhazard.bsky.social
Today, on #FossilFriday, I was at Blue Beach (Nova Scotia), exposed in basal Carboniferous (Tournaisien) shales and sandstones. It’s famous because some of the world’s oldest tetrapod tracks are found here. I didn’t find those today, but I did see this. Some invertebrate? @ichnologist.bsky.social ?
Sorry … I tuned out after reading ten of your words
… oh, forget it!
A false colour satellite image of Gabon. The image clearly illustrates how the country's geography is dominated by forests and by the Ogooué (Ogowe) River, visible running across the centre of the image. It flows westwards through Gabon, collecting water from numerous lakes along its course, before emptying into the Gulf of Guinea, where it forms a large delta. Other than the water bodies, the image is predominantly orange, representing dense, undisturbed rainforest, with darker orange or brownish tones indicating more humid, low‑lying vegetation typically along the streams and in swampy areas. Yellow and acid‑green patches throughout the image usually denote grasslands or exposed bare soil.
Gabon is 88% forest… so why doesn’t it look green in this image from space?
Because we used near‑infrared and short‑wave infrared bands to cut through haze and highlight what matters most: vegetation, moisture and land changes.
In this palette, 🟠 = dense, undisturbed rainforest 🌳

Satellite image of a curved coastline where dark blue sea meets golden‑brown land, with river channels, scattered clouds and a “#WhereOnEarth?” title at the top.
Where on Earth is this?

Four neon orange spacesuits hang on a rack decorated with NASA patches. Three of the suits have American flag patches on their left shoulder, while the last has a Canadian flag patch on its left shoulder. The room the suits are hanging in has a large black and white photo on the wall, in which astronauts are in their spacesuits and helmets while two people in white lab coats look on. Time for a reposting of a pair of images of a local bridge in the town where I live. The fun thing is that this is actually the same photo, but one version has been flipped upside down. (Can you tell which one?) How's that for a perfect #reflection??
