C'est le printemps! Spring is here!

First bloom spotted! Thinking of my Dad in the hospital today. The winter aconites he gifted me last fall are going to be the first flowers here each year. What spring flowers have you seen blooming?

I may have screamed a little when I noticed. The payoff for babying these fig trees for the last three years is going to be so sweet! // J’avoue que j’ai poussé un cri quand je les ai vus. La récompense pour avoir chouchouté ces figuiers pendant trois ans sera succulente !

L’avez-vous déjà remarqué? L’écorce sombre absorbe davantage la chaleur du soleil que la neige blanche, ce qui fait que la neige fond plus vite autour des arbres. Cela illustre bien le concept de l’albédo, dont vous avez peut-être déjà entendu parler dans le contexte des changements climatiques.

Have you ever noticed this? The dark bark absorbs more heat from the sun than the white snow, so the snow melts faster around the trees. This nicely illustrates the concept of albedo, which you may have heard of in the context of climate change.

Les petites branches tombées lors du récent épisode de pluie verglaçante sont un cadeau des arbres. On transforme ce bois raméal en paillis, plus riche en nutriments que les copeaux de bois ordinaires, présentant un meilleur rapport carbone/azote, et qui soutient les champignons bénéfiques. Merci!

The small branches brought down by the recent episode of freezing rain are a gift from the trees. Chipped ramial wood is a fungi-friendly mulch with a better carbon to nitrogen ratio and more nutrients than regular wood chips. Thank you, trees!

This year is different, as there will only be a small area available for planting. So although I’m tempted to grow a million things, I will show restraint and only plant about half a million. Organized by seeding date.

Achetez-vous de la laitue avec ses racines? Astuce : mangez les feuilles extérieures, conservez le cœur et plantez-le en pot ou dans un système hydroponique comme cet Aerogarden d’occasion. Le producteur a fait le plus gros du travail pour vous, et vous pourrez en récolter pendant des mois !

Do you buy lettuce with roots? Tip: eat the outer leaves, save the centre and plant it in soil, or in a hydroponic setup like this second-hand Aerogarden, if you have one. Most of the work has already been done for you by the grower, and you can keep harvesting leaves for months!

Eggshells are a good source of calcium for plants, but to maximize availability, a powdered form is best. We dry our eggshells in the oven and grind them in an old food processor. We could also just buy a jar like this at Canadian Tire for ten bucks, but where’s the fun in that?

Why name it Coolmore? After my childhood home, a two-acre property east of Ottawa, which, like my great-grandfather’s farm, was named after the family seat in Ireland from 1723 to 1920.

WATCH THIS SPACE. Regenerative agriculture is all about the before and after. Over time, expect to see vast improvements in both biodiversity and soil fertility. I put up two birdfeeders this winter. No takers so far. What will it be like after the wildflower gardens and food forest are planted?

Winter sowing – the whole point is actually to have fun with the most interesting plastic containers that come your way, like these sushi takeout platters! Producing stratified, pre-hardened seedlings without grow lights or indoor space is just a side benefit. 😉

Did you know that many native plants won’t germinate without stratification? That means allowing seeds to experience winter by exposing them to cold, moist conditions long enough to break dormancy – typically 30-60 days.
