Stop praising Orbán for not attempting a coup.

He only stepped down because Magyar's win was too massive to steal.

He rigged the constitution, captured the institutions, and used state media to his advantage.

He did everything he could to destroy democracy, and he failed

This is very true! And as the research on the issue shows and as the Hungarian example confirms, and the Polish one before that, the key to large turnout is long-term, grass-roots organizational labor that helps people understand how their single vote is a dignified part of a larger transformation.

In the wake of HU elections, social media flooded with „Just do x and far-right populism will be defeated“-solutionism.

If it were as simple as anti-corruption campaigning, Fidesz would have been defeated by 2018.

My hot take: there are many excellent and highly dedicated Hungarian analysts and journalists. Follow them beyond these elections.

Local experts provide the bedrock of our understanding of the world (says as a hardcore non-local analyst). They should be heard more in the international discourse.

Péter Magyar victory speech:

"We want to make a country where no one is persecuted because they think differently or because someone loves in a different way to others."

He may not have campaigned as a liberal. But this is a huge change of direction and rhetoric from Orbán’s anti-LGBTQ+ crusade.

I am begging you, if you haven't followed Hungarian political discourse in Hungarian over the last few weeks/months, perhaps hold back on your wild theories about what will happen in Hungary after the elections and whether Orbán will accept the results. My god.

Kein Experte zu Ungarn und dem System Orbán, dafür aber zwei Propagandisten der Rechten, einer davon steht auf der Payroll des ungarischen Regimes. Muss man das verstehen?

Mir ging’s um Leute, die in Ungarn kriminalisiert werden, weil sie gegen Diskriminierung, Korruption arbeiten anstatt einem Regimepropagandisten. Der ORF würd ja auch keinen Kreml-treuen Journalisten einladen, sondern zB Memorial. Lunacek (&Hafenecker btw) sind schon richtig auf dem Panel

👀🗳️ When polls close in Hungary at 7pm, there won’t be proper exit polls. Instead, some reliable independent pollsters will release embargoed surveys conducted just days before the vote. Their results are in line with their previous, already published findings (no surprises).

At 5pm it's officially a record -- at 74% it's the highest turnout in the history of modern elections in Hungary. And there is still two more hours to go.

Hungary’s turnout is BRUTAL: 37.98% by 11am (2022: 22.77%), pointing to 75–80% or more overall. In such a scenario, Orbán’s chances look slim, and it’s unlikely any party beyond Fidesz and Péter Magyar’s Tisza clears the 5% threshold.
