Ta!
We often hear about the grim conditions inside Victorian prisons, but inspectors' findings from Woodhill and Swaleside reveal that newer jails are failing, too.

Wonderful to reconnect with the Oriel community!
Award-winning author and Oriel alumna Kate Herrity reflects on her year-long research project into prisons for her extensive studies on sensory criminology.
“I’ve always been interested in prisons, partly because you’re not supposed to go in them,” said Herrity.

'In Defence of Walkability as a Crime Prevention Strategy'.
New preprint with @ianloader.bsky.social
We challenge the consensus that walkable neighbourhoods are more criminogenic.
We highlight two flaws in the literature: i) overreliance on police statistics; and ii) neglect of motoring offences.
I'm seeing lots of consideration of how we've designed out the social in communal spaces and thinking about how this all hangs together. In the meantime, particularly useful for #Teaching #Criminology, the impact of designing in Routine Activities for example. Just very much worth a read #CrimSky
Sharing here a recent interview in Black Histories with our own @nasarmeer.bsky.social
At a loose end this afternoon? Grab a cuppa and join us for chats about #Arts, #Music, #Prisons, #MigrantDetention. Really looking forward to a catch up #CrimSky

“The Justice Department has withheld some Epstein files related to allegations that President Trump sexually abused a minor, an NPR investigation finds. It also removed some documents from the public database where accusations against Jeffrey Epstein also mention Trump.”

This screams "Middle Passage" to me.
@kateherrity.bsky.social and I have a forthcoming chapter that links the overlapping coloniality of the Wests naval and carceral projects.

Here's a new article from our own @academicdiary.bsky.social, as well as @michaelacbenson.bsky.social and Maisie Tomlinson, which reflects on how we might teach research methods in ways that help foster a ‘demonstrably alive’ sociological craft.
