APIL's latest blog reflects on the conclusion of the Mazur appeal and how significant the past few months have been. The judgment is a testament to the strength of collective action.
"APIL’s contribution ensured that the voices of practitioners were heard at the highest level."
The Court of Appeal has overturned the decision in Mazur, in a judgment handed down today. It means that an unauthorised person can conduct litigation under the supervision of an authorised lawyer.
APIL intervened in the appeal by CILEX.

The playing field of fundamental dishonesty must be levelled in the interests of justice.
"The rules as they stand are open to abuse," president Matthew Tuff tells readers in APIL's latest blog. "The only way to curtail this is by introducing sanctions against defendants." Read the full blog below.
Children are no longer excluded from 'lost years' damages as the Supreme Court has overturned the decision in Croke v Wiseman.
The decision in Croke v Wiseman was out-of-step with the principle of full compensation and is in conflict with the notion of treating all equally.
The whiplash reforms have failed injured people and further personal injury changes would only exacerbate the unfairness claimants face, APIL chief executive Mike Benner has written in the Insurance Post.
"Any further reform to the PI sector is unwarranted and misinformed".
"The human misery caused to patients who are the victims of avoidable NHS harm has been laid bare in the House of Commons PAC report on clinical negligence spending. It is obvious that negligence is at the root of every penny spent on redress."

Vulnerable injured people who are suffering because of awful, life-changing events are made to feel as though they are not believed. They become emotionally and financially exhausted, terrified that they will be liable for everyone’s legal costs if they fight on and fail.
Some insurance firms and their lawyers are using cynical tactics to avoid paying compensation to people who suffer serious injuries due to the negligence of others, APIL has said in a letter to press. This is an abuse of the fundamental dishonesty rules.

The whiplash reforms have “utterly failed the general public and victims of negligence” and there is no evidence for insurers’ arguments to extend them.
