Breaking News!
Code: Preliminary Mega-Yikes!!!

Preliminary SSTs are spiking near a new record all-time high. The final data will take about 2 weeks to be posted. With the record ocean heatwave in the Eastern pacific and a rapidly developing El Nino, hang on to your tenterhooks!

Your 'moment of doom' and 'doom quote' will be taking a break for a few days, back next week sometime.

The general theme is "the collapse of global industrial civilization and sixth great extinction" with a tad of cynicism, in case anyone wants to post their own,

Cheers.

Your 'doom quote' for today:

"Our success in confronting the climate crisis will not be ours alone. It will be shaped, bolstered, and ultimately won by a united pledge from global leaders to set the world on a path to a clean energy future."

In a rush, I left the last 34 days worth of data off of this image in my post earlier today. You can now see the change towards El Nino happening over the last few days with the first hints of orange on the last bar on the right hand side.

Sigh.

Since we're now on 'Godzilla El Nino' watch, I decided to create the daily color stripes for the Nino 3.4 region, using the 1982-2011 baseline (first 30 years of data).

Will 2026 see Nino 3.4 go beyond 3.0°C? The climate 8-ball just scratched.

Global warming is making the strongest hurricanes stronger » Yale Climate Connections Recent studies link human-caused warming to more powerful, more destructive storms worldwide.

Your 'moment of doom' for Apr. 16, 2026 ~ a hard wind

"... we now need a 'Category 6' rating for hurricanes with winds of 193 mph (311 km/h) or greater, because global warming is expected to cause significant increases in maximum potential intensity."

SST data is preliminary for 2 weeks, but now we know new daily SST records were set on March 17th & 18th.

On the other hand, is the latest record just a ghost from preliminary SST data, or is something truly f&%ked happening? We'll have to wait 2 weeks to know.

Stay tuned!

Inside a jubilant DC conference where ‘the climate deniers are in charge now’ Trump’s EPA chief Lee Zeldin’s presence shows how much influence climate deniers now have, experts say

Your 'moment of doom' for Apr. 15, 2026 ~ Ignorance is strength.

"'Good news,' read a banner outside the main ballroom, erected by the CO2 Coalition, a climate-denying non-profit that co-sponsored the conference. 'There is no climate crisis.'"

Remarks at the White House Conference on Climate Change | The American Presidency Project Ladies and gentlemen, first let me thank you all for being here and thank the Vice President, the Cabinet, our Science Adviser, Katie McGinty, and others who worked so hard on this policy. If I might begin by just observing, I was looking at the clouds hoping we didn't have too much of a climate change this morning before the event could unfold.

Your 'doom quote' for today:

"On Earth Day I made a commitment to reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases to 1990 levels by the year 2000. And I asked for a blueprint on how to achieve this goal... we simply must halt global warming."
