Art swap with @/meganemii-kun on Tumblr! I did the lines on the left and the colors on the right, while he did the lines on the right and colors on the left!
🎉Happy birthday, Shinra!!🎂

Thank you! Having a set of only 12 colors really pushes me to do things I normally wouldn't! I'm learning a lot!
an expressive digital sketch in muted teal and brown tones. a humanoid creature with very lanky limbs sits in a slightly tense crouch. it's dressed like a 1920s flapper, but has put much more effort and attention into nailing the cuteness of its face than the cohesion of the rest of the body. there is something terribly and noticeably wrong with the way it has arranged its head, neck, and shoulders.
doodling up a weird little selkie. not in possession of its sealskin at the moment! mad about it!
Yes! I'm very happy to see that you are also following the developments of Kaihen!
I did not become a fan of BIRDMEN until after the series ended, but I really love your fan arts and your illustrations for Kaihen are very beautiful as well. I hope you have a great day🌹
when someone private qrts on twitter too... I'm like wgat didyou say. can I see.
I'm sorry, I know this is a lot. You don't need to respond to any of this. But I really do think she is using the yin and yang symbolism deliberately, and I can't wait to see how the symbolism develops as the series goes on.
Tanabe has learned a lot from BIRDMEN. She realized the biggest weak point in BIRDMEN was the fact she did not have an equivalent to capital in the world, so any critique of capitalism did not truly get to the heart of the matter. Kaihen addressed this as early as Chapter 2, so I'm thrilled!
In fact, I think the concept of yin/yang representing proletariat/bourgeoisie was present in BIRDMEN too! The wings of the revolutionary birdmen are black, but Viktor and the clones in EDEN wore white. EDEN is always trying to control birdmen; birdmen are always trying to break free and destroy EDEN
Personally, I am very excited by the idea of a little bit of yin within yang, and a little bit of yang within yin. It really makes you wonder whether they'll swap eyes part way through the series!
Saion has 2 divine eyes, an excess (yang). His brother has none, a deficit (yin). Since mana is the equivalent of capital in Kaihen, Saion represents the bourgeoisie and his brother the proletariat, which is described in Marx's The Holy Family as the positive and negative forces of private property.
I think yin/yang is definitely in Kaihen, especially with the twins in Chapter 26! Saion is always wearing white in his palace memories, but we only see his brother dressed in black. In that flashback, there is a half-moon, which I think represents the twins as two halves of a single whole.
