Culture, which varies among generations, plays an enormous role.

Beginning maths UG in 🇮🇹 used to be 80% women.

Mathematics was supposed to be both a women's subject and an easy path to a decently paid family compatible job (highschool teacher).

I’ll try to send you a copy. But AFAIK the students don’t say anything about their future options, only what they’re going through in Years 11+12. I think the implied return is the ATAR they expect to get…

Yes the interviews with students are telling. They describe themselves as good at maths before Year 11, but then find that this course gives them a mountain of work without a great return…

Then I read more, and found out that quotes from students were about the expectation that they had to work hard 😓… Is this a cultural/generational issue? 🤷🏽‍♀️

The HSC subject 8000 students dumped last year More than a quarter of students dumped chemistry, physics and engineering, but one subject lost students like no other.

I was discouraged when reading an article today, about decreases in numbers of HSC students for specific subjects between Yrs 11 and 12… (Guess which ones?) www.smh.com.au/national/nsw...

McArthur's Universal Corrective Map of the World (1979), showing all the continents oriented South-North, with Australia at the top-centre.

McArthur's Universal Corrective Map of the World (1979), showing all the continents oriented South-North, with Australia at the top-centre.

It's the work of Melbourne Uni student Stuart McArthur, & it launched on Australia Day, 1979.

It's now sold over 350,000 copies - presumably mainly to the 12% of the world population that lives south of the equator.

Take THAT, Northern oppressors.

Hey #MathSky did anyone here have, or work on/work with, an NSF-VIGRE grant back in the day?

I'm interested in resources re: "vertical integration" models (postdocs/grad students/undergrads), how they've stood the test of time (or not) & how it might look in today's contexts.

Quantum frontiers may be closer than they appear An overview of how Google is accelerating its timeline for post-quantum cryptography migration.

I would bet against Q day by 2030, but I wouldn't bet against it at 10:1 odds. ~10% risk is unacceptably high here, so I'm very in favor of transitioning to quantum-safe cryptography by 2029: blog.google/innovation-a...

Yes this means I 90% expect to be made fun of in 2030. Oh well.
