Culture, which varies among generations, plays an enormous role.
Beginning maths UG in 🇮🇹 used to be 80% women.
Mathematics was supposed to be both a women's subject and an easy path to a decently paid family compatible job (highschool teacher).
I’ll try to send you a copy. But AFAIK the students don’t say anything about their future options, only what they’re going through in Years 11+12. I think the implied return is the ATAR they expect to get…
Yes the interviews with students are telling. They describe themselves as good at maths before Year 11, but then find that this course gives them a mountain of work without a great return…
Then I read more, and found out that quotes from students were about the expectation that they had to work hard 😓… Is this a cultural/generational issue? 🤷🏽♀️
