If I'm feeling fancy, I might create a gradient layer and then use the round brush to apply a mask 🫣

At heart, I'm more of a draftsman than an artist

my red flag is that I almost only ever use the default round brush at various opacities because everything people seem to like in digital brushes annoys me to use

It often feels REALLY BAD and also EXHAUSTING and sometimes like I need to GO HOME AND CRY.
But none of the books mention that.

Anyways, whenever I read that type of advice, I'm just left wondering....okay, but how do you do those behaviors without them making you miserable?
Like there's some underlying assumption that having a successful social exchange with a stranger should feel good or rewarding. But it DOESN'T.

But most of all.....perform all these highly desired social behaviors and people will Like You. Never stop to consider how doing those things feel or if they reflect your own priorities or attract the kind of people you want to know. Why would you need anything else if you're Well Liked?

Share your interests and values, but not if they differ too much from the group median. Be yourself, but only in a way that's pleasant or unobtrusive for other people. Be approachable, but don't do anything that people gossip to you about others doing lest they talk about you too.

On some level, behaving as expected in a given social context all just comes back to the assumption about who you should BE to start with. Self-disclose with authenticity, but not in ways acquaintances will find uncomfortable. Express your feelings, but not if they'll be seen as confrontational.

despite increasing attention for "trauma-aware practice," self-help writers sure do seem to hate the idea that not doing enough [insert desired prosocial behavior] might be someone accurately assessing contextual risks and not, like, choosing the wrong conversation branches out of ignorance

surface level pop-psychology books about socializing: self-disclosure is an important part of growing closer to people :)
