On this day in history, labor icon Sidney Hillman was born. He bridged the gap between the factory floor and the White House.

Illinois recently strengthened its child-labor law, while neighboring state Indiana keeps rolling back protections for young workers. This is no coincidence. Illinois has a much larger number of union workers—people who stand up to bosses and won’t let them hurt their children.

On Alaska’s North Slope above the Arctic Circle, they work in whiteout conditions with wind chills as low as -100. When the company tried to slash benefits and cut wages, they organized. 💪
Women’s History Month continues with Rose Schneiderman and the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. After the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire killed 146 garment workers, mostly young immigrant women, Rose Schneiderman became a leading voice for workplace safety reform.
With immense gratitude, we thank David McCall for a lifetime of dedication to our union. From joining at 18 as a millwright at Bethlehem Steel’s Burns Harbor Works to leading our union, his legacy of advocacy will inspire generations to come.

Addie Wyatt was a labor leader, civil rights activist, and the first Black woman elected as an international VP of a major union. She fought for fair wages, racial equality, and opportunities for women in the workplace.
