Today we say goodbye to ESA’s Milky Way-mapper Gaia! The Gaia spacecraft has completed its sky-scanning and will be switched off this morning.

I’m seeing a lot of people blame the Monash University Museum of Art for the decision to postpone an exhibition featuring Khaled Sabsabi. The Museum didn’t make this decision and the staff are devastated. The Museum was ordered to pull the show by Monash Vice-Chancellor Sharon Pickering.

I liked the sky the way it was. To look at it was nice. I used to stargaze now and then, though always unprecise On where to see the Southern Cross or which, indeed, was what. If anyone remarked, "There's Mars," I never said, "Ifs not." I liked the moon the way it was, adornment for the night, A crescent riding high above, or full and round and bright. I liked it pleasantly remote and do not wish to think Of spacemen splashing it with red (or even true-blue) ink. But now like gems, some real, some fake, the stars become confused, Their mystery before sufficed. Now mortal man's bemused. With Sputniks rushing round in rings, who knows what he may see? I liked the sky the way it was. I wish they'd let it be.

Dorothy Drain's columns often included humorous or witty poetry. I like this November 1957 poem because I think she presages very modern concerns about the impact of satellites on dark skies, and the rights of the Moon. #WomenInSTEM 🧪 #IWD25
