I grew up with cassette tapes, video tapes, vinyls and CDs - would love to rebuild my collections if I had the luxury of money and space.
Maybe ppl are recognising need for personal ownership and ctrl of access over things we enjoy, + drawbacks of letting corps/algorithms dictate what we consume.

Just my personal opinion and experience: I believe streaming was/is a poor sticking plaster over systemic issues that prevent many ppl frm rebuilding physical media collections. Namely scarce physical space to store, precarious living situation (renting) and lack of money (see prev 2 points).

Either celebrate games as art, or drop the pretence. There’s not really a middle ground.

A crate made of wooden slats stands behind a clay vessel in the shape of a long necked, square based bottle. It is painted in a mixture of yellows and reds. The remnants of a blue and cream coloured label are stuck to its side, torn at the perforation. At the base of the bottle rests a wooden stopper trimmed in a golden coloured metal with black painted lettering on the wood.

A collection of close-ups of the bottle on its own showing areas of detail such as minor imperfections in the paint edges and application. Small chips that have occurred in the clay as well as the overall design of the decoration.

The wooden stopper is affixed into the opening by a parchment label that runs over the top. The label is designed to prove it is sealed when sold and the parchment is perforated to easily release the stopper.

The wooden crate is displayed from multiple angles to show its full design as well as an isolated shot of the stopper. Its inner area is divided by wooden planks into six spaces to fit bottles of varying types. On the short side there are openings to allow for easy handling and an inset area of parchment to mark the contents. On the long side there are large black letters painted across its center and a smaller square in the bottom right corner with red letters stamped inside it.

A recent gameplay addition to a #UE5 project required something to pick up, inspect and stack. So I decided to throw together a quick crate and clay 'bottle' to fit the need while also stretching the artistic muscles in the process. #b3d #substancepainter #gamedev #gameart #indiedev

My spiciest gamedev take: "just use Nanite" + industry race toward visual fidelity has legitimized/enabled ppl (often not artists) who demand art pipelines start w overcomplex "high quality" assets then work backwards.
Bad practice imo, but maybe I'm too nostalgic abt the Old Ways of optimization.

If you can't buy it, or don't want to buy it right now - please do wishlist. If you play it, please do review. The team truly threw their everything at it, and what they've made is something beautiful and resonant. It could use every support, even if just to inspire more folks to try!

I hate having to do the "look, they're normal just like us" post, but sometimes you have to do that when American propaganda tries to convince everyone Iranians are "animals".

Finished Metal Eden. It's not exactly outstanding in terms of game design, but visually, it's stunning.

I've seen a lot of people say "Marathon looks cool, but I wish it was a single-player game". Metal Eden might be the closest we have to that, at least visually.

It's not often a written piece makes me wheeze laugh at my desk, this was such a delight. Flawless concept, perfect execution, 10/10 no notes.

yeah my interest in this game immediately fell thru the floor, a real shame bc I enjoyed a lot about the aesthetic and vibe.
Someone at the top clearly doesn't care abt 1. using AI to cut labour/financial cost (the exact thing it was always intended for) and 2. coming across as underhanded abt that.

Giggling at "guy sux" was a great start to my day! one of my fav things abt gamedev is silly placeholder assets and stupid bugs.
Gamedev is hard, imo it's vital to lighten up the endurance march of trudging thru a longterm creative project by being silly with it and making yrself/each other laugh

Learning to be an environment artist for the games industry involved a lot of time spent looking at all kinds of rocks for reference purposes. Which sounds boring but honestly it taught me that sometimes you have to just embrace the delight and awe of a really *really* big rock.

Fwiw as a former early career gamedev, now hospitality worker, this is a moodπŸ«‚
It's why I'm p much on social media hiatus + stopped posting art for months now. Finding alternative work, gaining the stability to form longterm plans or pivot careers feels so tough in these crazy times, it truly sucks

oooh that's such a neat concept pitch! I've been doing other stuff away from the games industry/gamedev for ages now myself and lost my creative spark for a while, but in an ideal world that's exactly the type of game I'd love to play or help make!

I need every single male artist that follows me to read this. It's not very long. You need to bear witness to this shit. You have to see it with your own eyes because you never will in your everyday life.

I'm serious, read it all please
