Why did the Synod try and outlaw this? because it was 'unseemely to be used in any true Christian kirk, where there is preacheing and profession of the comfortable resurrection of the dead' (MacTavish, ed., Synod of Argyll Minutes i, 61)
Attempts made by the Synod of Argyll, 1641, to outlaw the corronach, 'a common custome in some of the remottest pairts within this province of ignorant poor women to howle their dead unto the graves'
A source, c.1607, talks of Lowland Scottish soldiers at Stornoway being besieged by the men of Lewis. During a night attack on the Lowland fort at Stornoway, many Lewismen were killed by the defenders. At daybreak, the Lewismen 'stall[e] away with ane heavie corinach' (Plantation & Civility, p 381).
What an amazing source - great find, thanks for sharing. See Dwelly's dictionary, 'Corranach'. Also, Còmh-ràinich, crying together to mourn the dead, according to Gaelic dictionary, 1828, under 'Corranach.' archive.org/details/dict.... Also Scots Dictionary dsl.ac.uk/entry/snd/co...
