A book with a white cover, with the title Language and Social Issues: An Investigator’s Toolkit. Authors are listed as Mary-Caitlyn Valentinsson, Shiloh Drake, and Amy Fountain. There is an image of a happy Black woman with her mouth open, seeming to be shouting or talking, and colorful wedges seem to be coming out of her mouth like speech.

It’s here!! I can’t believe I had the good fortune to get to write an introductory #linguistics textbook with two of my favorite people. I’m very proud of this book and wish I could teach with it—but I hope that other folks will let me live vicariously through them!

authors' copies just arrived! Textbooks are a scam but we worked hard on this one and in spite of the ai-cover art I'm pretty proud.

In 2000, Rex Lee Jim had the idea for me to do research on Navajo poetry. In 2006, I published this short paper on one of his poems. And for 26 years, he and I kept talking about poetry and other things. He was a poet's poet's poet. His poetry lives on.

Thanks for sharing this, Eddie has been one of my heroes ever since I learned about him in 1973. To the extent that Secretariat was able to be a happy, well-adjusted guy, it was Eddie's doing. Their friendship has always been an inspiration!

Sign Petition: Induct Eddie Sweat in to The Horse Racing Hall of Fame Eddie "Shorty" Sweat was and is the epitome of horsemanship. Eddie was the groom and care giver to the immortal (3983 signatures on petition)

Hey, so one thing to do for Black History Month is sign this petition for Eddie Sweat to be inducted into the Horse Racing Hall of Fame: www.thepetitionsite.com/540/203/619/...

Eddie was a Geechee Gullah man from South Carolina and arguably key to Secretariat's success on the track.

Met with one of my international doctoral students today, close to finishing a really interesting dissertation, and they have decided not to apply to any academic positions inside the US after finishing. Not unexpected, just a sad reflection of our national self-sabotage.

Driving north through the desert in Nevada we stopped to pee and explore a ghost town and found a microcosm of American culture wars playing out in an abandoned cement factory building. I took some photos. The star: a charred teddy bear wearing an American flag sweater we named Roosevelt.

Whale vocalizations not only resemble human vowels, but also behave like ones!

We previously discovered that sperm whales have analogues to human vowels.

In a new preprint, we analyze linguistic behavior of whale vowels.

It is 100% carrying water for the opposition to participate in this collective delusion that Dems for some reason need to answer for every teen who throws a rock rather than hold the Trump admin accountable for intentionally creating chaos and breaking the law to stoke violence.

They are in charge.

Policy Notice: Implementation of Standard 15% Indirect Cost Rate

Good news, chat. The NSF is temporarily pausing the implementation of the new 15% ICR rate proposal pending a court hearing. I mean, it's good news insofar as good news is possible in this domain. It's less bad news, anyway. #linguistics #highereducation www.nsf.gov/policies/doc...
