A massive portion of disability is the result of societal structures. People like Brianna Wu would sooner genocide deaf people than seek a better societal standard. They would sooner genocide many groups of people (trans, disabled, BIPOC, etc.) than make healthcare affordable.

“it’s mental illness” is a carceral sentiment in probably the majority of instances it is invoked. when folks who do/say evil things are conflated with those living with actual mental illness, it just reinforces the demonization of the already marginalized.

i’m someone who lives with psychosis. some of the kindest sweetest people i know are psychotic. calling someone a psycho when what is actually meant is “i find their beliefs dangerous & reprehensible” is the fastest way for me to lose any shred of respect i had for whomever says it.
