No, this is my freelance gig....just wishing I could pick up more than 1 thing....when it rains, it pours π

My vibecession talk would 100% be a 12 minute rave with slides showing cool geology photos.
It's good to take breaks at conferences! π
NGL I miss working in my local sbux bc something wacky happened almost daily π
I'm sure you remember the AIDS quilt covering the entire National Mall in DC. But SOOOOOO many ppl just forget that we lost *so many* gen-xers to AIDS in the 80s/90s. π
Bonus: who's got CV tips for an employment gap *not* related to kids or caregiving? π
Four specific #editinghell requests within 3 hours, all with similar deadlines...guys can you *please* space out your submissions so I can pick up more than 1 of these at a time?
I picked the one with the best pay and then when it was assigned it was $70 less than the quoted fee.
Fuck everything.π
Thsnks. I know my gap is hurting me and it's infuriating bc I just want to do the things I spent over half my life learning to do. :/

I bet there are some ocean scientists who would be happy to support cancer research by bidding on original SeaQuest stuff! Please spread the word, ocean fans! @whysharksmatter.bsky.social @drandrewthaler.bsky.social @drcraigmc.bsky.social
#OceanSky
SOBBING BC I HAVE NO MONEY TO BID ON THIS.
I loved seaQuest as a kid ππππ

Itβs time to show off your Penguins pride π
Yard signs are now available at select local @DICKS locations! See the full list of stores here: http://pens.pe/4cGdwnZ
Following bc relevant to my interests. ππ
What if your gap in employment is bc nobody will hire you though...I don't have kids or caregiving that interrupted me, it's that there's no jobs and those I do apply for leave me hanging for literal *years* before saying I'm "not what they want" (non-faculty, fwiw).
Dohohoho
Lol, I was doing okayish (barely solvent) until about 2022 when the AI bullshit started, the volume of freelance work fell off, and the company paid us much less for the same amount of work.
This is measurable. I made more in *grad school* (20 hr/wk) 15 y ago than I do now. I'm fuckin poor now.
"...itβs a lobotomy of U.S. marine science that shifts our entire blue backyard from a managed ecosystem to an unregulated gas station."
I fucking hate everything.
Piling in to the quote posts to say:
We know from the old Creationist vs Evolution βdebatesβ that no one really wins or changes their mind. But holding an event with both scientists and science deniers on the same stage makes it SEEM like there is equivalent evidence for both sides.
Green line is GEO. A big part of why I didn't bother with the GRFP. They'd never fund a marine geo project that would need shiptime that we didn't already have.
Thanks for this...was exactly what I was looking for.
GEO still at low %s, which is why I never bothered applying after my first go-round back in the day.
I feel that image SO HARD.
Guessing that OMB impounding the NSF budget effectively kills anyone trying to submit a RAPID grant. πππ
Also wouldn't it be neat to get a RAPID cruise together to see if anything changes at the ridge crest?
Does RAPID even exist anymore? I shudder to think what would happen if we had another deepwater horizon happen and we couldn't get out to sea for rapid response science.
Saved *several* cruises from major problems just bc I'm super detail-oriented but didn't even get thanked in the acknowledgements. Was thrown under the bus asap by 1 supposed mentor who did zero mentoring.
Anyway, anything scientific ocean drilling adjacent is dead in this country so... π€·ββοΈπ€¦ββοΈ
Iβve been thinking about this a lot. for the first time I can remember, thereβs no supposedly obvious alternative path to reliable employment that our leaders can demand we pivot to.
indeed, theyβre not even bothering to try to offer an alternative - and scamming starts feeling like the only answer
Also they still have Chikyu for anything borehole/drilling-related. We have a science funding agency that thinks quantum BS is somehow going to solve everything. Who needs ships?! ππ
Ah, but you forget that our govt doesn't actually *want* to know when a tsunami is coming. There's the rub.
The JdF CORKs likely recorded these....I'll have to get on the ONC data portal to see if 1026 and 1027 caught them, but I still haven't solved my lack of MATLAB problem so IDK how I'm detiding the data.
I'd like to see many more small vehicles in general. My Yaris hatchback had an MSRP under $20k and still gets 30+ mpg 20 years later.
