Sitrep from the full run. Nice and noisy throwback to Feedback, which the Dead had stopped “performing” in earnest in May of 1970. relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Poster for Grateful Dead gig in Madison, Wisconsin, on March 14, 1971
Sitrep from the full run. Give me a West or East Coast gig any day ofc, but as I note in the book, the Midwest was *the* proving grounds for the Dead (& their PA) in the early 70s. The band really had to earn it outside of coastal homebases. Bonus: this all-timer poster. relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Sitrep from the full run. Kreutzmann’s solos in this early ‘71 stretch are ripping and inspired. (Check out 2/24/71 drums too, while you’re at it.) relisten.net/grateful-dea...

Sitrep from the full run. Not just a Dead gig, but a study in dream telepathy. relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Sitrep from the full run. Deal enters the chat. Watch each card you play and play it slow. relisten.net/grateful-dea...
A combination of “situation” and “report”
Sitrep from the full run. The return of good ol’ five-piece Dead, this show marked the beginning of Hart’s voluntary departure. (As Weir told the crowd, Hart was “not well, under the weather.”) Bird Song enters the chat. Don’t cry now. relisten.net/grateful-dea...
All roads lead to the Dead.
Sitrep from the full run. Playin’ enters the chat, making that five songs debuted at this classic Cap gig. Daybreak on the land. relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Sitrep from the full run. Flowing out of the debut Wharf Rat, the Dead enter a musical passage for the ages. Years later, reviewing show tape with @dgans.bsky.social, Phil Lesh was moved to tears listening to what’s now lovingly referred to as the Beautiful Jam. relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Sitrep from the full run. Wharf Rat enters the chat. But I'll get back on my feet someday. (Also big shoutout Ned Lagin, who sat in on clav and organ this whole show.) relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Sitrep from the full run. Yet another debut—Greatest Story Ever Told enters the chat. (Or if you’re Mickey Hart, The Pump Song.) Y'know the one thing we need is a left-hand monkey wrench. Herky-jerky fun. relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Sitrep from the full run. Loser enters the chat. Last fair deal in the country. relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Sitrep from the full run. Quite a gig. Bertha enters the chat—first known performance by the Dead. (Thank you, Betty.) relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Morning Dew? Yeah, that’s gonna be an immediate tear in my beer.

Hallowed Dead ground
It's a beautiful day to listen to the Grateful Dead
Sitrep from the full run. As 1970 drew to a close, the nascent taper scene grew emboldened. Garcia: “Can the spotlight guy put some spotlights on the microphones out there?” Lesh: “Got some bootleggers among you back there. Let’s find out who these people are.” relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Tuesday, 8:27 am. Listening to the Grateful Dead and crying.
Sitrep from the full run. Final Till the Morning Comes. Thank you for your service 🫡 relisten.net/grateful-dea...
Well, this would certainly be an interesting development. Deep audio forensics of some of the earliest live Dead recordings, possibly matched to the Muir Beach Acid Test, which I wrote about and for which no tape was known to exist.
