Oh my goodness. My students gave me gifts on our last night of class tonight. I did not expect them and I was incredibly grateful. I often feel like this work is thankless and all we ever want is to see students succeed. Such thoughtfulness.

Institutions like Hampshire College and Sarah Lawrence College, have their place in the world and I am grateful to be a product of this type of quirky and powerful institution. Higher ed needs schools like Hampshire College, & so do legions of students yet to benefit from the richness of that space.

I’ve also been blessed to know more than a few brilliant Hampshire College alumni. We tend to give a knowing nod & comprehension that schools like ours were incubators for the next and best.
Their similarities in “will they” or “won’t they” close conversations. The numerous fundraising campaigns and close calls with closure. The fear that always exists for me that one day, my beloved SLC will reach its max & will also reach the same fate.
Hampshire College’s recently announced closure is hitting hard. I didn’t go there, but I graduated from a peer institution, Sarah Lawrence College. I’ve always heard conversations about the two institutions & their similarities as small liberal arts colleges that dare to be unabashedly different.
