I'm very excited to read @rozinaali.bsky.social's forthcoming book on four families' experiences of Islamophobia in America. #AmRel

The first reviews of LONDON FALLING are posting and as a devoted longtime reader of @lauramille.bsky.social at Slate, I'm so grateful for this one.
Half a century ago, Norman Podhoretz celebrated the fact that virtually all American Jews had been “converted to Zionism.” Fifty years later, the consensus he hailed has shattered, as I report in this week’s issue of The New Yorker. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
Thrilled to announce my book, SEASONS OF FURY, will be out on August 25. Based on years of reporting and archival research, this book is a narrative history that follows four families to trace the rise of Islamophobia in the US.

News from Iran & Lebanon increasingly resembles years of bloodshed in Gaza—civilian areas pummeled, international law ignored & a spiral of war endangering millions. Understanding why means understanding the US-Israel dynamic in one key period: under President Joe Biden, after October 7, 2023

Big news. One man, Suhail Najim Abdullah Al Shimari, was detained from 2003-2008, and held in Abu Ghraib for 2 months. CACI "tortured him in various ways: he was subjected to electric shocks, deprived of food, threatened by dogs, and kept naked."
BREAKING: Pentagon Report: U.S. Attcked Elementary School in Iran
Despite attempts by Trump to claim otherwise, the U.S. military was responsible for killing at least 175 in a strike on a school in Iran.

In the first week of war, the US struck 3,000 Iranian targets (now up to 5,500) with an unknown number of munitions and Israel struck 3,400 targets with 7,500 munitions.
This allows an interesting comparison to Gaza, where Israel struck 3,600 targets with 6,000 munitions in the first 6 days…
It's not just that he refused to condemn Ogles and Fine; he endorsed the substance of their vile messages, taking issue only with their "tone," and he introduced a new line of bigotry-fueled conspiracy theory about Muslims wanting to impose sharia law. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

So according to the WSJ a US Senator conspired with another country to manipulate the US into starting a war, am I getting this right
Gutting international desks is troubling for another reason : deeply reported coverage helps shape foreign policy, and affects thousands of lives abroad.
Washington Post journalists have done tremendous work documenting the horrors of US wars, and shifting national convo.
The earlier incident started when he stopped his car after observing ICE agents chasing what he described as a family on foot, and began shouting and blowing his whistle, according to a source who asked not to be named out of fear of retribution. Pretti later told the source that five agents tackled him and one leaned on his back – an encounter that left him with a broken rib. The agents quickly released him at the scene. “That day, he thought he was going to die,” said the source.
My gosh. Alex Pretti was notifying neighbors that Trump and Vance's agents were chasing a family. A mob of agents then tackled him and broke his rib.
He thought he was going to die.
Then the very next week, he came back out to support his neighbors.
And a mob of agents killed him.

When I lecture to students about how the apparently thriving economy of the 1920s was really a house of cards just waiting to be knocked down, one of the points I stress is how much a small number of the very rich were essentially propping up consumer spending in unsustainable ways
"The ruling, if it were to stand, would have major implications for anyone detained as the Trump administration sought to deport them. It would remove the most effective means that immigration lawyers have for freeing their clients from detention while they are in immigration proceedings."
