I am thrilled to announce that I passed my dissertation defense! I have been so fortunate to have had such a supportive advisor and committee who were all so enthusiastic about my project! I can’t believe I’m here! #DrBaldwin
Today’s the day! On this day, the 2,778th birthday of Rome, I will be defending my dissertation! Let’s hope it goes well!
Scheduled my dissertation defense today (April 21) and sent my final draft to the committee! Can’t believe it’s finally happening!
Today is a great day! I sent a draft of my entire dissertation to my advisor! Also, my committee is working on setting a defense date. I’m almost there!!
Just finished Pentiment, a game set in 1500s Bavaria. Absolutely delightful. The writing was fantastic, the story and characters were engaging, and the medieval scripts and artwork were incredible. It’s short, but I loved every minute of it
Just sent a draft of my final dissertation chapter to my advisor! Let’s hope he likes it. Now, while I wait, I’ll start putting all the chapters together and writing an introduction. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel!
Read Alex Michaelides’ The Fury while on the plane. Very gripping read. I loved the unreliable narrator trope and the journey he took his reader on. Great allusions to Greek tragedy and Agamemnon, too. Nothing beats the Silent Patient, but I had a great time with it.
Starting my last semester as a graduate student today! Let’s finish that dissertation (and many more job applications)!
Had an incredible time at SCS/AIA this year. Saw a lot of old friends and met a lot of people. Ate a lot of good food. My presentation was very well received and I was awarded the Gruen prize! Couldn’t ask for anything more. Hope to meet more of my fellow classicists in the future!
I am absolutely thrilled to announce that I have been awarded the Erich S. Gruen Prize for my paper “Nomoi and Cannibalism in Herodotus’ Histories”!!!
#AIA #SCS If you want something fun to do today, come see my talk “Frowned Upon in Most Societies? Cannibalism in Herodotus’ Histories”, where I talk about funerary, nutritive, convivial, and vengeful cannibalism. It’s a part of what looks to be a great historiography panel! 11 AM. See you there!
With heavy hearts, we share this beautiful tribute to Sharon James, an absolute giant in the field and someone whose impact and absence will be deeply felt.

Finished a draft of a chapter of my dissertation! It’s certainly rough, but I’m very excited to get some of these thoughts/ideas down. I particularly liked my Seneca and atomism analysis. Now to find out what my advisor thinks of it…😬
Finished my first fellowship application. I learned a lot from the experience, but it was also an emotional roller coaster. On to the next one!
Any of my Classics friends read Alex Michaelides’ “The Silent Patient”? An incredibly dark and sad read, but the author uses the Alcestis myth incredibly well and I thought it was a very engaging and well-written story. One of the better novels I’ve read recently.
Everything is booked for SCS! You can find me at the Greek Historiography panel talking about cannibalism in Herodotus. Never been to Chicago. Should be a great time!
I have arrived from the other place! Now to figure out who is here and how this works…
