When I worked at the Stamford Advocate (a Hearst paper) a decade ago, all work outside the hours of 9-5 was expected to be off-book.
School board meetings that started at 7pm? Source meetings? Breaking news?
Cover it, of course, but don't dare put it on your time card.

We love our jobs, and weād like to be granted the flexibility to do them!
We want to be trusted to do our jobs and be out in Connecticutās communities, with you.
Help us get Hearst to the bargaining table so we can bring the news to our readers, from where itās actually happening.

How can we report on our communities when we're not in them?
Hearst wants many of our journalists cooped up in an office three days a week with inflexible work hours.
They're forgetting that news doesn't happen in a cubicle between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Despite management's in-office work requirements, some of our most essential work happens in the field, whether that's in news or sales

@ctnewsguild.bsky.social journalists are going to keep working hard to bring the stories of Connecticut to our readers. Weāre ready to bargain a contract with Hearst that respects our work and makes local journalism a more sustainable career.

February/March member recap!
Itās been a busy couple of months - hereās some of what the hardworking members of the @ctnewsguild.bsky.social got up to!
The New Haven Independent covers our @ctnewsguild.bsky.social union's continued effort to get Hearst to stop delaying and just sit down and start negotiating a contract. More below.:

Weāre thrilled to share that the VTDigger Guild has reached a deal with our management on an updated contract. The agreement weāve built together will make VTDigger a better place to workāand only strengthen the journalism our members produce every day and that our readers across the state rely on.

This decision is an affirmation of what we already know: WE are the union. The path to a more fair and transparent Hearst CT, more stable careers for CT journalists and better journalism for our readers is with a contract.
We're prepared to meet Hearst at the bargaining table. Letās go.
š³ Meeting and acting in solidarity with our unionized Hearst colleagues in TX, NY, CA, and across the country with @hearstunion.bsky.social
š³ Talking to each other every day about how we can make Hearst CT a better place to be a journalist
For almost 300 days, weāve been acting like a union:
š³ Speaking up on behalf of ourselves, each other and local journalism
š³ Asking questions and pushing back against policies that make it hard to do our jobs
š³ Getting to know our local reps and fellow members of @nyguild.bsky.social
THE NLRB JUST SAID WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW: OUR ELECTION WAS VALID. HEARST: WEāRE READY TO BARGAIN. ARE YOU?
Yesterday, nearly 300 days after our union was certified, the National Labor Relations Board rejected Hearstās attempt to invalidate our election results.
Let Hearst know what you think about union-busting. Tell Hearst to stop stalling and come to the bargaining table! actionnetwork.org/petitions/te...
Our @ctnewsguild.bsky.social won a major victory Wednesday when the NLRB ruled against Hearst, denying their appeal over @ctnewsguild.bsky.social's election. More here.....nyguild.org/post/a-major-win-for-uni... nyguild.org/post/a-major...
Money. Power. Respect.
Coming together in unions is how we win all three.
I can't get over this number: in 2007, there were 360,000 newspaper jobs. Now, there are 80,000. "My local paper sucked!" Sure. What sucks even more? The void. "I get all my news from the Guardian!" No, the Guardian doesn't report on your town council, your school board, local cops.
These member testimonials make clear whatās at stake. After a disappointing last session at the bargaining table, we hope they show up to our final bargaining session ready to seriously engage and deliver a fair contract. ā
A crowd of people with signs that read "ProPublica Workers: READY TO STRIKE" AND "PROTECT DEMOCRACY: PROTECT PROPUBLICA'S WORKERS"
A woman stands with a raise fist and a sign
A person stands with a megaphone and a sign that reads "ProPublica Workers Deserve Fair Pay"
Weāre ready to strike! Our members are walking out of @propublica.orgās offices today to practice picketing and show we are serious about winning a fair contract. Support us by signing our petition: actionnetwork.org/petitions/te...

This is a dark day for our democracy -- at a time when we need the @postguild.bsky.social the most. Our union siblings deserve better than inept corporate leadership. We stand with the @postguild.bsky.social #SaveThePost
