I propose a new rule, you can’t build any NEW buildings unless you can also keep the power on pretty reliably in your EXISTING buildings

If they say #airborne, it's an occupational disease, #employer responsibility.
If it's droplet, then handwashing reduces transmission: #worker responsibility
I'm not sure why unions aren't on to this aspect of it, especially since #measles can cause one to become #blind #deaf & brain damaged
let's be clear about what's happening: donald trump and benjamin netanyahu, whose countries have been committing genocide in gaza since 2023, unilaterally started a war with iran, and are now threatening genocide there.
i think if you tweet "a whole civilization will die tonight" you shouldn't go to the hague, the hague should get to come to you
#AvianMalaria folks has anyone been able to access MalAvi recently? 👀
Scandalously snubbed for an Oscar but you should watch it anyway!

oh gosh this reminds me that my boots need replacing, but I am trying NOT to buy American anymore! Thanks for the reminder!
I'm particularly impressed that when Ford reduced/froze tuition fees, he decided that the policy corollary was "let's cut student aid"
Now that tuition fees are going up again, the policy corollary is "let's cut student aid!"
Nothing if not consistent.
Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.”
Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.
It seems like Big Tech has decided the solution is not to make AI products people want to use but rather to require people to use AI, either by incorporating it into products where it is unwanted or potentially by just requiring people to use it, perhaps via alliance with an authoritarian.

Still wondering when people will draw the line on their continued presence on X, especially those who pay for the service.

Do you like songbirds? Are you concerned about how wildfire smoke may impact their physiology?
I'm searching for graduate students who are interested in looking at the effect of wildfire smoke on songbird physiology! Come join my lab @usaskartsci.bsky.social!

This video of Chicagoans intervening to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE is making the rounds on Instagram.

Lots of handwringing over this every year or so, but I am unconvinced that there is any explanation needed other than the prevalence of male-dominated industries that pay well and do not require a degree.

Now ask yourself why the right hates universities.
That said, creating skilled workers is not the only point of higher ed. Along with a long list of uncontroversial goods for individuals and society, it's also one of the only protections we have against the biggest current threat to democracy: disinformation (someone tell the govt).

We hope everyone had a safe Labour Day in solidarity with workers everywhere! Thank you to WLUFA’s @cautdefencefund.bsky.social rep. Cameron McKenzie for standing with @dalfaculty.bsky.social, who have been locked out since August 18. #LabourDay #KeepDalStrong @ocufa.bsky.social

Community and government scrutiny are building against "ebikes" as a whole and that is a huge problem for our movement.
We need to regulate the shit out of them (throttles bikes) before it harms the ebikes for mobility revolution that is helping to get more people out of cars.
Shoutout to DC for the amazing turnout yesterday! #FreeDC
These numbers should be way higher
I pledge that I will not provide any service to Columbia University. I will not speak at conferences held at or organized by Columbia. I will not publish with Columbia publications or provide peer reviews for them. I will not provide outside tenure evaluations for Columbia departments. I will not contribute in any way to the institution until everyone who is responsible for this week’s shameful decision has resigned, retired, or been fired, and until Columbia repudiates their catastrophic choice.
I wonder if the Columbia leadership realizes (or cares) how much blowback there might be from *within* the academy.
This post, from a Cornell Law professor, is worth reading:

exactly. we are literally on the verge of achieving a post-scarcity world. there is enough for everyone, it’s just being hoarded by a handful of billionaires.
Fine is for not being racist enough
By now, we’ve all seen the headlines. Cities are cracking down on e-bikes. Lawmakers are holding emergency hearings. Parents are demanding bans. “Something must be done,” they cry at local city council meetings before driving back home in 5,000 lb SUVs.

And yes, the robin in my yard is just fine thank you very much!
I love birds but my LEAST favourite bird behaviour has got to be that weird sunbathing trick where they lie there all forlorn and gaping and seemingly broken-necked and get you all freaked out. I’d rather be pooped on a hundred times than come across another sunbathing bird!
