Ben Spies is the team manager for the Rahal Ducati Moto team Kayla rides for. That's P.J. Jacobsen he's talking to, who was Kayla's teammate in Supersport last year and is racing for the same team in Superbike this year. So yeah, she has a lot of good guidance.

Racer Kayla Yaakov confers with her team during qualifying while team manager Ben Spies and Superbike rider P.J. Jacobsen talk in the background
There's a lot of experience and racing knowledge in this photo behind Kayla Yaakov. Maybe that's why the 18-year-old qualified on pole for the MotoAmerica Supersport race today at Road Atlanta, besting a two-time AMA Superbike champ and a former MotoGP rider, among others. #motorcycle #motosky
I haven't talked to anyone who knows anything definitive. As I wrote in my article, no one seems to know whether his plan is to try to return to fitness and come back to racing or whether he will retire from racing.
More options keep popping up for riders who want a smaller adventure #motorcycle. Today at Common Tread, see our comparison between the CFMOTO Ibex 450 and the new Kawasaki KLX500. China or Japan? #motosky #motorcycle news and reviews www.revzilla.com/common-tread...

I love the smell of warm rubber in the morning. MotoAmerica Quad Lock Superbike racing starts this weekend and I'm at Road Atlanta. It's been a wild off-season with nearly all top Superbike riders changing teams, so get up to speed with my preview article. #motosky www.revzilla.com/common-tread...

There's this by my colleague Ari Henning, one of the best in the U.S. motorcycle media, who's been affected by a life-changing motorcycle crash (his father's). There are more good options than ever. It's just a matter of choosing the one that fits your riding. More street-focused or off-road focused, big, small, or middleweight, etc.
Adventure #motorcycles keep evolving. Today at Common Tread, see Ari Henning's review of the new Kawasaki KLE500, with its own mix of off-road ability and highway capability. #motosky; #motorcycle news and reviews www.revzilla.com/common-tread...
I think your GPS is accurate but it's including the speed of the Earth's rotation in your personal top speed.
That should read "with his sister Colleen Taylor."

In the event anyone following me is ever in my part of western Massachusetts, U.S.A., stop at this cafe, The Store at Five Corners. It has a great history, older than the U.S., owned by a community group. Just reopened. Say hi to Sean, who runs the place with his sister Taylor. He rides a KLR650.

Weekend #motorcycle reading from the archives. This one's partly about a good motorcycle museum, but (warning) it's also personal, about riding a motorcycle I've had 27 years to a place I lived 40 years ago, and gaining new insights into my own history. #motosky theridesofar.com/2025/06/fres...

Too cold for me, too, but I'm too stubborn to let that stop me. "What's all that white stuff?" is what I was saying after I spent 11 years living in tropical and sub-tropical climates, but now here I am in the north. Life happens.

Black and green Kawasaki KLX300SM stopped by an ice-covered lake in the country on a sunny day
This photo from yesterday's ride makes it look like I'm pushing the season more than I really am. Wasn't as bad as it looks and today we may hit 60 degrees F and get rid of the ice. #motosky
Probably more off-roady than you need, but the Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR are amazing 50/50 tires. I even did an instructional track day on a road race course on those tires on an Aprilia Tuareg. (www.revzilla.com/common-tread...) Better in sand than Mutants but not better everywhere else.

Seems like you already have lots of good advice, David, but I'll add that if I had a GS, I'd probably put Mutants on it, too, since like you I'm not going off pavement much. I'll also second the Michelin Road 6 suggestion. Excellent in rain and, despite the name, surprisingly good on a dirt road.
