just speculation! but even in my own life i’ve been witness to this behavior from men when being romantically and/or sexually pursued by them and they seem confused when i’m completely put off by their advances.

perhaps this is why men, especially nowadays, fail when pursuing women (or men)? they use their lust for their favored subject as a vessel for compliments and/or interest but the party on the receiving end is, more often than not, put off by this behavior.
