👏 Canada 👏 Post 👏 is 👏 a 👏 public 👏 service 👏

Nothing proves how capitalism has brain rotted everyone than thinking the post office, hospitals, public transit, libraries, etc. need to turn a profit to be worthwhile.

it makes me so FURIOUS that within a year we went from taxing carbon to subsidizing it.

AND YOU CANCELED A PUBLIC TRANSIT FUND!!!!

Statement: $5 Billion in Transit Cuts a Huge Step Backwards - Environmental Defence Statement from Sam Hersh, Clean Transportation Program Manager Ottawa | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People – Cutting $5

I'll be sure to remember this when I'm stuck at home most of the summer again because the air is too toxic to breathe.

And those of us who aren't destroying the planet get...cuts to public transit funding.

If you think Doug Ford using taxpayer funds to buy his private jet is unrelated to his trying to have jets fly from Toronto's Island Airport, I've got a failed private waterfront spa at Ontario Place, a shuttered Science Centre, and a tunnel under the 401 to sell you.

“You gotta learn AI or get left behind!” is a bit galling given that the entire purpose of AI seems to be to steal our work and fuck our brains and shit up the planet, which is to say, its GOAL is to leave us all behind. That, in order to make its owners rich.

Reminder that per capita, Ontario spends less on public schools, universities, and healthcare than most other provinces. But our Premier does have his own jet now.

One of the busiest parks in Toronto and as usual, it looks like trash. Staff destroying the landscapes they’re supposed to care for by driving full-size pickups through them. Incoherent design. Poor construction. Ugly fixtures. Somebody should lose their job over this.

One thing I really want NYC to get to in its bike lane designs is the idea of social cycling. A parent should be able to ride next to a child. Two friends should be able to ride next to each other. A senior on an adult trike should not have to worry about blocking faster cyclists. Etc.

Carney told Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen that the mission around the moon was a point of national pride. He's cutting the Canadian Space Agency by 33%.

Thread detailing Mark Carney’s war on libraries, knowledge, and culture throughout so many parts of society.

His deep cuts to the public service are not in line with the vision he presents of a bold and more independent Canada.

Veteran prosecutor accused of telling Toronto cop he should have given ‘false evidence’ under oath — ‘We protect our own’ “What am I supposed to do? Lie?” — That’s what Const. Edin Hasanbasic said he responded after veteran Crown attorney Marnie Goldenberg confronted the officer about his testimony.

Kémy Adé was shocked by the immigration refusal letter she received.
In rejecting her permanent residence application, the Immigration Department cited her current job duties, which included wiring and assembling control circuits, building control and robot panels, programming and troubleshooting. The department said these duties didn’t match the Canadian work experience she claimed.
Well, no, they didn’t. Adé is a post-doctoral research fellow and guest teacher at McMaster University — and those skills are not part of her repertoire. Nor are they what she submitted in her immigration application a year ago.
“I saw this language about this job description that has nothing to do with me,” said the health scientist from France, who has a PhD from Sorbonne University in the immunology of aging. “I was disoriented how this could happen.”
But a disclaimer at the bottom of the refusal letter might provide a hint.
It’s believed to be the first time that the department explicitly referred to the use of generative AI to support application processing in immigration refusals. The disclaimer also noted that all generated content was verified by an officer and that generative AI was not used to make or recommend a decision.

Today in AI:

Canada rejected the PR application of a McMaster postdoc from the Sorbonne who works in the immunology of aging because the generative AI being used to process applications (😱) entirely hallucinated her credentials.

Everyone involved should be fired.

Jesus FUCKING Christ. Why the fuck would you do this to your process. Just - fucking WHY. The public service is going to be digging itself out of this shit for YEARS when they finally figure it out. It's going to make Phoenix look like a blip.

Doug Ford’s contempt for local democracy is matched only by his contempt for Toronto taxpayers Ford has decided there will be jets at Billy Bishop airport, no matter what Torontonians want.

Enough is enough. I make the case in today’s Toronto Star for why it’s time to push back on Doug Ford’s bullying and chaos. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

A respectful message for Canadian Prime Minister @mark-carney.bsky.social.

I spoke out loudly for Canada to elect you, because of your intelligence, experience, and emphasis on nation-building.

Any successful nation-building HAS TO GO ALL IN on renewable energy, and car/oil independence in cities.

Doug Ford going to the mat on this like it is an existential threat probably because it is.

There has to be something so damning, so utterly corrupt in these emails and phone records that he sees it as a legitimate threat to both his political future and future business dealings.

Ford government to allow ‘bring-your-own’ alcoholic beverages at outdoor public events
By Richard Southern

It will soon be bring-your-own-booze in Ontario.

The Ford government will soon be allowing provincial residents to bring their own alcoholic beverages to outdoor public events, 680 NewsRadio has exclusively learned.

Starting on April 30, Ontarians can bring their own booze to municipally designated cultural or community events, including farmers’ markets, movie screenings, art exhibits, and neighbourhood festivals. Currently, only organizers of live sporting events can obtain this type of tailgate permit.

I've been around Ontario long enough to know that whenever they dangle booze in front of the voters like keys in front of a baby they're about to do something *unbelievably* corrupt.

At THIS level of "Drinks Some Beer, Losers", I have to imagine Algonquin Park is becoming a chemical weapons plant

The institutional buildings of 1960s Canada were extraordinarily well-built. Throwing them away would be madness.

The 1969 Science Centre is an incredible piece of architecture. It needs some work.

The new building complex is a kludge that will be inferior by any measure.

It really makes clear that many US Americans don't speak other languages and don't engage with media from outside the US.
My family in Europe calls me (a Canadian) American in the same way I'd refer to them as European.
USians pretending this is new are demonstrating their ignorance.

I mean, we do say the "Fathers of Confederation" but not with the reverence US Americans often have. I doubt most Canadians can name more than a couple of them.
Not sure what a better term would be now that you mention it. Leaders? Members? Founders?
