Illustrated poster from Seattle Parks & Recreation promoting “Bicycle Weekends 2026.”

The scene shows a person riding a bike and another walking along a scenic path with mountains, trees, and flowers. Text reads: “Bike, walk, or roll with us on Lake Washington Blvd! No cars on select dates,” followed by dates in May through September.

Lake Washington Blvd will be open to people & closed to car traffic every weekend this summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day!

The predictable schedule makes it easier walk, bike, roll, along, or drive to the boulevard.

Thank you Mayor Wilson, community advocates, and Rainier Valley Safe Streets.

People who ride their bikes on the sidewalks should get 2-way protected bike lanes

Context: There’s this weird thing happening on Twitter right now where automatic translation is causing a super cool cultural exchange between Japanese speakers and Americans. People are going back and forth sharing their meals and it’s delightful.

I’ve rarely seen anything like this on Bluesky.

Wishing Kemper Freeman a very happy I-90 light rail day.

Part of the experience riding on the first 2-line train across the I-90 bridge:

- Waiting at platform: "Next train to Downtown Redmond in 2 minutes." Crowd cheers
- On the train; "This is the train to DT Redmond." Crowd cheers
- We start moving; "Next stop, Mercer Island." Crowd starts booing 😂

A 3D model of a Toronto barrier with a metal plate adhered to the bottom, with the plate extending beyond the width of the barrier, extending out into what would be a road.

A 3D model of a Toronto barrier with a metal plate adhered to the bottom, with the plate extending beyond the width of the barrier, extending out into what would be a road.

I'm no engineer, but could @seattledot.bsky.social could do something like this to solve this recurring problem?
- Mount a metal plate to the bottom of a Toronto barrier, by gluing it on and drilling supports into the barrier.
- The plate is wider than the barrier & extends out a bit into the road

Obviously not as strong as something made of solid steel, but maybe enough to keep the barrier from moving from incidental nudges?

A photograph of several mobile L-shaped Meridian-brand steel barriers blocking the entrance to a roadway.

- The plate is glued to the road, like the barrier has been so far.
- When a vehicle tries to push the barrier, it pushes against the internal supports too, which are mounted to the plate, but the vehicle is weighing down the plate, preventing the whole thing from moving.

Similar idea to these guys

I think a few of my friends were on the same train 😅. I got an earful from them! They said they booked a hotel for the night, and the town was so small that the hotel manager, her husband, and the sheriff were carting folks around!

The first year of congestion pricing in New York saw straphangers take more than 90 million additional subway rides than in the previous year, a new report from the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA (PCAC) found.

here’s a crazy fact: under congestion pricing, NYC subway ridership grew by more than the *total* number of riders on BART last year

Change is possible: Seattle's Westlake Ave Trail before/after

The super useful Westlake Trail was carved out of a publicly owned parking lot. It was absurdly controversial at the time, with the loudest opponents being a “super yacht” marina. Now it’s loved and no one wants to go back.

Bid limits—prohibiting local governments from performing their own work over a certain dollar value—are a form of privatization that increases the cost of government.

This is just dumb. If the agency can't charge fares riders shouldn't be expected to have magically paid them.

URGENT BOLLARD ALERT.

SDOT is going to the Pike Place Market Historical Commission next Wednesday to get initial guidance on the "physical protective barriers" planned ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

The board is getting its temperature taken on a "hybrid approach" of bollards and vehicle barricades.

Great news: Julia Reed is reintroducing the presumed liability bill this session (it was HB 1518 last session). The new bill will be slightly narrower in scope. If passed, drivers will be presumed at fault if they collide with a pedestrian or cyclist in a bike lane, crosswalk, or intersection.

The quickest way to crank out pedestrian refuge islands would be for the elected officials to provide a steady annual budget for in-house staff to design & construct the islands
We did that in LA for Vision Zero for a while
The key to making it work is long term local funding & ability to hire

I like how Mayor Harrell wanted to provide examples of his work on affordable housing in his latest newsletter but just sort of gave up.
