"In order to render the strange logic of dreams, Freud quoted the old joke about the borrowed kettle: (1) I never borrowed a kettle from you, (2) I returned it to you unbroken, (3) the kettle was already broken when I got it from you."

My answer to the q what's the scariest film you've seen is always JESUS CAMP (Rachel Grady & Heidi Ewing, 2006), a doc about homeschooled evangelicals. This girl of 8 has had her mouth taped shut for an anti-abortion protest. The preacher says "Isn't that the most beautiful thing you've seen"?

Pleased to have an article in the new issue of @socres.org — “Hollywood’s GASLIGHT and the Gendered Dynamics of Gaslighting.”

Fascinating to re-visit the film in today’s climate.

I've been a bit quieter than usual these past months because @astra.bsky.social and I have been going deep into what we are calling End Times Fascism. The research has been bleak, I won't lie, but it's also been inspiring.

Nancy Fraser | After Habermas Jürgen Habermas may be variously described as the moral conscience of postwar Germany, the last great systematic...

Incredible, sharp, critical reflection on Habermas’ legacy from Nancy Fraser. This is the postmortem I’ve been hoping would come and also sums up so much of my relationship to his work

Cover of The Essential Senghor: African Philosophy and Black Aesthetics by Léopold Sédar Senghor. The cover is a textured beige with the title in a teal serif font. Partially overlapping the very bottom of the title is a sepia colored photograph of Senghor. The subtitle is written in black to the right of Senghor and the author’s name appears directly below in italics. “Edited and translated by Doyle D. Calhoun, Alioune B. Fall, Cheikh Thiam” appears in white on Senghor's shoulder.

Save 30% on "The Essential Senghor," edited by Doyle D. Calhoun, Alioune B. Fall & Cheikh Thiam, which provides a new opportunity for English readers to engage with Leopold Sédar Senghor’s critical and philosophical writings.

There's lots of great moments in 1,000 Women in Horror (especially coming from @horrornonna.com and @kierlajanisse.bsky.social) but Kate Siegel describing her own C-section, which is then illustrated with clips from horror films has got to be the top for me.

The airport perks for Congress may be drying up, not a minute too soon Delta Airlines suspends its special congressional service, while a Senate bill could end the line-skipping perk for members of Congress.

BREAKING: Delta is suspending its special service desk for members of Congress until TSA is fully funded, per @ajc.com.

Delta says members of Congress will now be treated like all other flying customers.

Walmart is rolling out digital price tags at all of its stores.

At the same time, the corporate giant just secured a patent for "dynamically and automatically updating item prices.”

Plus another patent for using machine learning to predict demand and recommend prices.

Some thoughts on Okja (Bong Joon Ho, 2017), which we watched as the final film in Representing Animals today. It's an obvious predecessor to Mickey 17 (Bong Joon Ho, 2025), both of which use animal alterity and oppression as a lens to critique capitalism. Both also have a similar cartoonish tone.

Doctorow has coined some widely-used concepts, but his arguments have always felt elusively shallow and anemic to me, and this really snaps the reason into focus: It's because they're always and entirely focused on the consumer.
