Thank you for the Research Materials. As a Scientist (not really), I find this messy bricolage of effects and behaviours to be unfalsifiable and irreplicable. Curious what might be an example of a refusal to accept an argument which didn’t count as Backfire Effect. But not very.

So any failure to be utterly swayed by the suggestion of an opposing viewpoint is the Backfire Effect in action? That’s some Effect!

Seems to me the way this Backfire Effect works is that if someone’s told there’s something innately wrong with them, it’s an attack on their Self and they’ll bridle. If they’re made to see they’ve merely *done* something wrong, then to correct for it is an affirmation of their Self.

I looked it up. TLDR. There was all this stuff about why do people root for losing teams or why do people dress outlandishly or why do people listen to unpopular music or go on LARPing picnics or do anything which invites ridicule or derision they’re equipped to shrug off.

I don’t think so. I think that to call someone an idiot is to tar them with a constitutional limitation which by definition they’re powerless to overcome, and to make them feel shame for that is cruel. However, you can show someone they’ve made a mistake. Then they’re not bad, they’re just wrong.

Persuasion doesn’t work by making people feel dumb, persuasion works by showing people they’re in error.
