We're really excited to share this research exploring the unique CV risk of men and women when it comes to obesity-induced vascular dysfunction.
Huge credit to ✨ Lisa Ivatt as this was her main PhD work, but also to the co-authors & colleagues who helped guide this from concept to publication.
💡 Take home messages:
➡️ In mesenteric PVAT (mPVAT), obesity induces unique upregulation of ECM pathways in male, but not female mice.
➡️ In contrast to insulin sensitivity, the relative protection of female mice from obesity-induced mPVAT dysregulation is not mediated by ovarian hormones
For the first time in mice, we have investigated how anatomically different perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) respond to high-fat diet, using omics approaches to assess their transcriptional signatures. In parallel, we analysed the impact of PVAT changes on vascular function.
Our latest publication is now out in Cardiovascular Diabetology as part of a special collection on Perivascular Adipose Tissue!

In brief:
🎯Neutrophil Elastase (NE) regulates glucocorticoid (GC) bioavailability through cleavage of CBG
🚚Increased NE in obese adipose facilitates local GC delivery
🐭🚶♂️NE manipulation in mice/humans impacts adipose GC exposure, linking obesity and inflammation to cardiometabolic outcomes
Years of collaborative work, fuelled by cortisol (and coffee!), but I'm thrilled to share our passion project on neutrophil elastase-mediated regulation of adipose glucocorticoid action has finally been published in @naturecomms.bsky.social
