A new paper on guinea fowl gait biomechanics for National Biomechanics Day!
How do bipedal animals adjust movement to avoid falls in slippery terrain? We found that guinea fowl slow down, take shorter steps and adjust posture to reduce fall risk in slippery terrain, just like humans.

Winter is back
Yes exactly, I am very disappointed. I have to take some time to think about what this means and what to do about it
I used to hang out at Lens & Shutter too but sadly it died a long time ago now
I gave my grad class a sermon week 1 about how they could use AI & get 100% & never come to class, but what’s the point?
Result: by week 13 only 6 of 26 students are still coming to class (but all are submitting perfect homeworks).
Many thoughts, none good

I’m also thinking about changing my scientific computing grad course from an ‘introduction-to-python-and-some-data-analysis-concepts-for-total-newbies’ to ‘how-to-design-and-implement-code-for-scientific-research‘ and include ai and assume basic python knowledge exists already

“many, many people left angry comments online. Several wondered what the world was coming to.
The uproar may have been a reaction to the fact that, when interviewed, the duo spoke only in an alien language of grunts, rasps and squeals”

Another fun little paper from the lab!
you may not like it but this is what peak performance looks like
PS I will always have time for my trainees; that’s part of my booked-off-time for my scholarly work. No appt necessary. That’s the thing I want to be able to do
I’m experimenting with time blocking my calendar, booking chunks of all days as appts for myself so I can do my actual scholarly work; booking an hour for lunch; if you need to book a meeting with me let the chips fall where they may (and there are now rather few places to fall)
email & (institutional) calendar are insane concepts; anyone on earth can send me work by occupying my inbox even if for a moment; calendar tells all “I am free” unless I’m “booked” during that time as if I’m sitting around waiting to be assigned work #academicsky #psychskisky #neuroskyence
I think the reason AI propagandists are so flustered by the fact that no real writer wants to use their idiotic tools is that they themselves don't enjoy writing. They see it as a boring arduous chore to be avoided, while real writers actually enjoy writing and actually care about the quality of it.

👏 May actually be my favourite Rush album
Update from my January 2022 article on working from VR: I'm still working from VR (even now as I write this). I spent $30 on a far more comfortable headband, but otherwise not much has changed. I still often don't know when the sun sets.
