The answer to this question always was, and always will be, HOUSING @financialtimes.com
I earn 3 times my mother. Yet I live in a place about half hers, and paid rent for 15 years the get there.

Wow this really puts in perspective how bad 1973 was
I love it. You should watermark stuff this good
A very stupid chart, which suggests that the number of Mr Blobby TV appearances moderately correlates with CPIH, a UK measure of inflation.
Day 15 of #30dayChartChallenge, correlation. Getting real stupid with it. It actually took me ages to find a source of data that would even mildly correlate. Spurious correlations are hard!
Colleague: "I don't know what to say".
Me: "Get me The Economist on the phone"?
This story is based entirely on dodgy advisers lying to potential clients to get money out of them. The one person they actually spoke to who used this 'service' was rejected and returned to Pakistan and has since been blocked from returning to the UK.
Shabana Mahmood’s migration changes are expected to save just £600m – about 6% of the £10bn the home secretary claimed, according to the government’s own data.

Yes that looks right: "These are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups."

What on earth is Hand Management? It sounds like a euphemism
I think the secret is that a lot of the time the author doesn't know exactly how each part of their work works. They try different things and each point they judge whether it now reads better than before. They might just use an effective stock character or scenario.
Literary studies - The author's intention isn't that important; what matters is what the work actually does. An architect could have a brilliant plan for a building but if it's built and the roof leaks the plans to keep everyone dry don't matter.
“LVT won’t raise rents”. There’s no economic case to be made that a land value tax could raise housing rents but people are obsessed with businesses ‘passing on’ taxes and can’t think about the mechanism by which that happens (or doesn’t)
The Irish Economy is doing well. Too well perhaps
God left us a long time ago and He’s never coming back
Nobody understands this about the government’s settlement reforms. People think it's 10 years for most & 15 years for care workers
But its 15 years for all midskill roles, whatever the salary, if not a graduate job role classified at RQF level 6. Lab technicians, data analysts, hotel managers
"Bunch of guys obsessed with Ancient Sparta can't beat the Persians at sea" was probably one of the known-knowns, come to think of it.
The Hibernian Society served as a meeting point for business elites and slave owners in the Irish community in South Carolina to make connections as they sought to enrich themselves via the racial slave system they adopted. One of its early presidents owned approx 400 slaves.
Exciting stuff!
Chart showing population crashing then steadily growing
TIL: Ireland’s population still hasn’t recovered from The Great Famine of 1845-52.
The current administration is really living up to its promise of bringing back Spartan military ethos by talking loudly and losing more than winning.
They’re telling me a great empire will be destroyed if I attack Persia. Even the oracles who don’t like me very much, very nasty, they all said to me, “Sir, it’s one of the great empires, and it’ll be destroyed. And all because you attacked Persia.” That’s what they’re telling me.
We Have Enough Dead Friends Come over. The doors are open, my flat’s a mess and so is my heart but the doors are always open. Come over. I will make soup, probably from frozen but the important thing is we will both eat. You don’t have to be dying, but if you are, or you feel like you are, or if living’s been hard, call me, and I will show up. It doesn’t have to be that bad, it doesn’t have to be bad at all, but if it is, please call. Do you want me to do the groceries? Do you want me to mop the floors? Do you need to be held; you don’t have to be dying to be held. If you want me to be there, I want to. I’m on the bathroom floor again, and breathing is hard, and eating’s been hard, and sleeping, the world is a laden thing rolling around on my chest lately. Just being alive is heavy tonight, but we have enough dead friends. Come over.

You can specify relative position in ggplot with I(x) I(y).
E.g. annotate("text", x = I(.5), y = I(.5), label = "hello!") will place the text in the middle of the plot.
This, combined with alignment arguments is like 87% of the magic for me.
Graph showing the jump in Home Heating Oil cost in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland uses a lot of Home Heating Oil. Prices have doubled since the start of the war with Iran.
Data is from the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland

Legend! This is so useful
I spent 4 months trying to answer a simple question: has this book been translated into my language?
Turns out no one tracks this. Not ISBN registries. Not Amazon. Not Google. Not libraries.
So I built a tool that crosses four databases to piece it together.

Seu Jorge is incredible
New post, on whether I could get Claude Code to complete a data task that had taken me AGES a decade ago…
