i want to say something snarky about Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs by Marty Robbins (1959). it's great, no doubt, but i really wish people would:
- keep branching out and listen to music from the 50s or, dare i say, even before 1959
- get OUT of album supremacy mindset!
many great songs under two minutes, even powerfully emotional ones. but has there ever been a better vocal performance on a sub two-minute song? a chiltonesque affect on "you can never be strong, you can only be free" sells it

listening to late style tom waits these days, and finding myself getting more and more moved by the phrase, "you're the same kind of bad as me" -- thrilling, sexy, dangerous, beautiful. maybe my favourite of his from the 21st century
chat what are we saying, which is better:

one of the most profoundly annoying moments in culture was when everyone was fawning over the music video for This is America by Childish Gambino. like it was fine video, whatever, but people were comparing it to EDWARD HOPPER
man, it's CRUCIAL to donate to arts orgs right now! just donated to the Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival

harry styles... certainly *sounds* like the most, but feels sooooo dull and boring. not sure he has anything REMOTELY interesting to say about anything.
halifax: do check out Caroline Shaw tonight at St. Andrew's United Church! saw the opening night performance last night. delighted in the playfulness of interaction and felt moved by the spirit of the collaboration between Shaw and Vanessa Goodman. stunning!

Halifax is and has always been home to a vibrant arts community that consistently maximizes opportunities and access. Really sad to see this most recent provincial budget straight-up destabilize and eliminate vital funding across sectors. Sent my MLA a letter; do the same:

interpolating death of a salesman with an AMAZING visual gag? truly, if i could show william shakespeare one thing from the 20th century, i think it could be episodes from The Simpsons' Golden Age
lately i've been driving my husband CRAZY by saying this to myself at least 200 times a day: "you can't just eat an orange and throw the peel away. a man is not a piece of fruit!... this show was supposed to close this week. close this show! close it, i say!"
talking about the great songwriters can be fun. in this case, paul simon and bob dylan. but remember and heed my warning: this kind of talk led malcolm gladwell into thinking that he could be the one to explain paul simon's greatness, so please be careful out there, you don't know who you're baiting
p.m. dawn the bliss album... ? amazing!
instead, i'm going through the Dean's List for 1993. :)
time to refresh my cocteau twins ranking? most recent listen of Four-Calendar Café is making me want to shoot it up the power rankings
have become a tad fixated on the book's reputation now. i think even haters will agree that it's gripping and moving (hard not to feel SOMETHING by all of that), but what ultimately is the book trying to say about life? what are its aesthetic/literary merits?
rip to a massive legend. the country weeps

a dream about a song about a dream, with a line that's more aligned with the dream logic
had a dream last night and this song was playing in the background (one of my cooler dreams), and today i learned that the chorus is actually, "spill the wine, take that pearl" and NOT "dig that girl" wow

sad to hear about matt kwasniewski-kelvin. i believe it was matt's idea to use that big brother sample in 'bmbmbm', which adds to the song's wiry atmosphere, and this performance not only one of their best of this song, but he (literally) throws himself into it

for better (or worse), it seems like Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight is like Al Pacino's performance in Dog Day Afternoon, in that it ended up inspiring a generation of actors. am i wrong? other 21st century performances that have proven to have the same import?
i think nathan did something so cool, so moving, and so revelatory on his latest episode showcasing the best of christmas pop music (do NOT listen to his stance on the Booker T & the MGs christmas album tho). mogwai and bing crosby, together at last

i'm here for a defence of Wonderful Christmastime, a song that sounds like a shopping mall and store catalogs and emerged at the exact time where those two things became synonymous with christmas. also, the song hits if you are trying to make a playlist called A Very Stoner Christmas
