EdCon 25 is in the books. Great conference for K-12 cybersecurity education. Lots of fantastic speakers and an opportunities to connect with teachers from across the USA. I did a series of live video posts. Check them out! www.instagram.com/reel/DK8VVKT... #csta #cyberdotorg #cybersecurity

I was mystified when the term “influencer” started being used. A job title for someone that others emulate seems rather strange.
My students in the CSHS have their photo shoot today for the yearbook. So proud to have them show their passion for computer science! @cstama.bsky.social @csteachersorg.bsky.social The shirts are pretty cool too!
We survived a half with no Trump Jumbotron moment and only one mention of Taylor Swift.
The arms race involves more than bombers and submarines. It continues today with taping undersea cables, cyber attacks and digital surveillance.
Next week my CSHS and Cybersecurity students are donating computers for a group home for unhoused students. They used @linuxmint.bsky.social to make sure each system works and has all the tools needed. @csteachersorg.bsky.social
Never forget William Henry Harrison. Only lasted 32 days.
The White House has just announced the National winners of the PAEMST award. The highest honor for STEM teachers in America. Congratulations to all the winners. As a 2015 alumni, I am very inspired by your dedication! www.whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-up...
The digital divide has always been a problem. But if we don’t have the knowledge to solve this issue I’m afraid that my students will be left behind compared with affluent districts that are already using AI.
My thoughts are that the voices that support banning due to their fear of cheating are much louder than those who want reasonable protections and guidance for AI. How many schools have done PD to help teachers learn how to leverage AI in their practice?
Not sure what else is blocked. Google Draw was impacted by IT but I was able to get it restored after a few weeks of complaining. I think I will try to get an inventory of blocked AI sites next week.
So my school has blocked every single generative AI tool for students. I understand that it’s been done to deter cheating but ignores all opportunities to leverage AI in learning. I’m more in favor of ongoing teacher training and establishing solid academic rules over outright bans. #EduSky
My first computer was the Tandy 1000. One review called it the computer the IBM PCjr should have been. I think the decision to use cartridges for programs was a horrible idea.
I used this as part of my instruction about AI for my HS students.
The advice has always been to read to your children. If they are surrounded by text, given high interest materials, shown that reading nurtures a variety of skills, they should respond positively. I’ve encountered many high school students who never read for pleasure. They are at a disadvantage.
My X feed was full of “people” asking if I liked Asian women.
I worked at the Heathkit store near NYC for a few years in the 1980s. It is where my technology career began. We also sold Apple products, desktop publishing, CAD and Netware systems. The Heathkit H-248 was my system and it was built like a tank. Zenith was the leader in portable computers too.
The majority of my teaching career has been spent as a special education teacher. It’s a position in my high school that allowed me to learn about chemistry, math, English and history. I acquired knowledge that cut across multiple disciplines. And anything I did benefited ALL students.
The number of well known and unknown brands of systems rocking the Intel 80286 was extensive. Dell, Compaq, Gateway, Zenith, AST and others used the 16 Bit ISA bus. IBM struck back with the proprietary Microchannel architecture that ultimately was abandoned. EGA video was the new standard.
A man with a gray mustache and hood stands in a backyard blanketed by snow.
First measurable snowfall of the season in the Boston area. My coastal town picked up about 5 inches. Somewhat more than predicted due to ocean enhancement. Now it’s just been cold and sunny. Might be a bit more on Christmas Eve.
But pulling out the power cord is a lot more satisfying.
My district refreshed our computer labs. IT wanted to simply trash the 50 computers. Instead, my students are installing Linux Mint and looking at donating them to local community groups. #Linux #EduSky Several are working in our robotics lab and I hope to find good homes for all.
