Gabriella’s Vietnam has a pho cocktail, and O’Jung’s has a Caesar salad martini. Fiorella and Caletta also have interesting martinis. Almanac has a rotating menu, but usually has some good savory options.

Using Philadelphia’s open data, our findings suggest that if officers inclined toward bias-based pre-textual stops have no need to actively filter out white drivers, such officers will still target young, Black male drivers and selectively exclude older, Black female drivers for traffic violations.

Doing so allows for important with-in race comparisons and can be particularly useful for assessing bias in racially homogenous or segregated places.

Dr. Lance Hannon and I argue that Grogger and Ridgeway’s veil of darkness test can and should be extended beyond race to other observable characteristics.

My pleasure! His mosaics are definitely worth seeing! His Magic Gardens are beautiful, but tickets are expensive, so it is nice there are of publicly accessible examples of his work through that section of Philly.

Just a general warning: some steak shops are cash only.

I like Jim’s (which is cash only), because the steak is good and you get to eat them among recently uncovered Isaiah Zagar mosaics.

just thinking about how sanitation workers have saved more lives in one single year than the police ever have in hundreds of years of existence and you don't hear them whining every day about not having the respect of the public

Why Doesn’t the U.S. Government Know How Many People Die in Custody? Under the Death in Custody Reporting Act, the government is supposed to track how many people die in law enforcement custody — but the data is a mess.

After roughly 25,000 unredacted death records from 2019 to 2023 were made available online late last year, The Marshall Project checked them against independent sources on in-custody deaths, including news reports and academic research.

We found at least 681 deaths missing from the federal count.

My dad drove a hearse when he was in college. He said it was great for hauling party supplies and the like! Parking was a bit more difficult though.

It is legally impossible to deport citizens. This is not deportation. Removing citizens to foreign prisons, knowing to a certainty that they will be subjected to treatment that violates the U.S. constitution, doesn’t deserve any label that connotes legal legitimacy.

A quote from Sarah Stillman that reads, “What I found . . . is hard to describe as anything other than a pattern of widespread torture of people with mental-health issues in county jails.”

In a new report, Sarah Stillman investigates deaths related to starvation, dehydration, and neglect in county jails across the U.S.—a crisis that at times has been covered up by private health companies and government officials.

Some charities/non-profits might take the furniture (dv shelters, etc.,). There are also sometimes flea market sellers you could reach out to directly who might consider buying the pieces from you.

A green spire of Philadelphia town hall is lit in the centre of the frame. Tall skyscrapers frame the sides of the corner of South Broad Street and Sansom Street in Philadelphia, as hundreds of Eagles fans in green and white American football jerseys walk along what is typically a busy city street in Philly (usually busy with car traffic).

A truly distressing offer from Bukele. Transnational prisons are a troubling “solution” in any case, but it is all the worse when the host country is known for deplorable detention conditions and no respect for the rights of detainees.

Community Oversight Board and Independent Policing Auditor In 2021, the Arlington County Board established a Community Oversight Board (COB) and Independent Policing Auditor to improve transparency and accountability in the Arlington County Police Department.

How awful! There seems to be an independent auditor for police misconduct in Arlington. I don’t know whether it will be an effective avenue, but you might consider submitting a complaint there if for no other reason than it will be documented by the county. www.arlingtonva.us/Government/C...
