I love doing digital agency/digital well-being lessons for middle schoolers.

It just makes me feel like I'm...I don't know it's so much worse to talk to adults about it? The kids seem genuinely to consider it, the adults are like blank on it?? Like?! Anyway let me know if you're looking for collaborators or even want to brainstorm. OR VENT. Maybe we could try AASL??

Yeah I do multiple lessons about it for students and I might try to apply for ISTE next year but l one wants to hear it lol it's somehow so much more depressing when it's like YOU CAN TEACH THEM HOW TO DO IT! than the kids using it? I dunno, bleak!

I am so glad I am not going to ALA this summer where every other presentation is about how SUPER AND COOL AND AMAZING AI is and how you HAVE to use it and teach with it. No thank you!!! No thanks on that one!!!

I don't mind being turned down for NCTE even though one of the ELA intervention teachers and I had an AMAZING presentation (with the stats to back it up) about how poetry has empowered her students but knowing they'll have 600000 sessions on HOW GREAT AI IS and TEACH WITH AI...now that's depressing.

hey edu world: instead of having 53 more keynotes/sessions at conferences about how you can "teach AI ethically" and "teach your students how to use AI instead of just letting them do it" how about some sessions and keynotes on educating properly about the uselessness and dangers of it, eh? Eh?

Huge shout-out to Rosen Publishing for creating A HUMAN BEING MADE THIS, a series for K-4. I think every school librarian working with elementary should build curriculum around it. Now can they make a secondary version, I volunteer to write some this summer. dai.rosenpublishing.com/series/A-Hum...

Hello Bluesky maybe if you know me from other social media you know one of my favorite gratitude practices is sending real mail. I got a bunch of weird rando postcards at a reuse store. So...it's time to send some mail. You want in? Reply and inbox me!

I got this for $1 at a thrift store and now the discussions will begin. #WhiteboardMagic

They Were Convicted of Killing Their Abusers. A New Law Offered a Second Chance at Freedom. An Oklahoma law was supposed to help reduce the sentences of women who killed their abusers. Why are nearly all of them still in prison?

My latest, with @propublica.org + @nytimes.com:

An Oklahoma law was supposed to help reduce the sentences of domestic violence survivors who fought back -- women who are serving long sentences for killing their abusers. Why are nearly all of them still in prison?

I still believe in a world where real people make real things and that's in part because this 7th grader crocheted this onto their hair clip, "just 'cause" and isn't that reason enough?

daskfjsal;kdj what I think this mirrors my other big issue with threads. Every single person there I have encountered is operating from a place of bad intent, assuming the words, going to the worst conclusion as quickly as possible. I understand this is the algorithm but it is still VERY unpleasant.

also I am very old and threads ... I don't know there's something about the format that is really hard for my brain to track. I get spun off and lost it in much easier than anywhere else. I can't keep up with it as easily. Makes me sad all the old networks of authors and librarians are broken down.

Nothing but love for the avid narrative non-fiction reader who is always desperately trying to get their friends to read it as the friends only care about fiction. Kid is constantly out there hand-selling narrative NF. Spent all lunch booktalking this one. Keep at it, kid. "Just try this one."

What a CRAZY coincidence they are never even HONOR books. I'm sure it's nothing!

but hey what do I know? I'm only the person forced to resign from the Newbery committee because I talked about a kid liking a book on social media. So you obviously can't rely on me.

you'd think at least regularly maybe "the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature" would be ... a picture book or an early reader or more maybe more often graphic novels. Wouldn't you? Wouldn't you think that?

2 months ago 7 0 1 0

do y'all ever think about the truly wild coincidence that 99% of the time every single year "the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature" is ... a middle grade chapter book for ages 9-14? That seems weird doesn't it. And yet somehow....

@kosokojackson.bsky.social which related what books would YOU recommend for someone who just finished THE FOREST DEMAND IT'S DUE and just discovered reading again and wants to know what their next book should be? 😀😀

She wanted also to pass along her HUGE thanks and word that it "literally awakened a desire to read" in her niece so you know she's gonna be buying all your books! 💖

Don't you love when you get messages from friends because a teen in their life finally connected with a book so they want more recs to keep the reading going? And don't you EXTRA love it when it's a book you know is totally amazing and by @kosokojackson.bsky.social ?? Yeah I love that too.

The most magical time of year for a school librarian! Teaching lateral reading time!

3 months ago 14 2 1 0

Without fail, they all say something in their application about the reason they love reading is because it helps them experience other lives, etc. Not knowing, of course, they are highlighting exactly why reading is so powerful: it makes us better and more empathic people.

they get to add a signature at the bottom, that's why there's the white space, and of course we create personalized booklists on bookmarks for each display, which everyone - including teachers - makes a big deal over. Real joy.

This is our 10th student librarian and I just gotta tell you it gets better every time. (This is a generic version of the sign I made to share, the real one has the student's name obviously.) Every part of this program is a joy. #librarylife

For my last RT, there's no one making books about prison abolition and toll incarceration takes on families and children like @prisonculture.bsky.social. Please get all three of her picture books for your libraries.

Prisons Must Fall

We published a children's book last year. It's available today at 40% off. I didn't do a lot of promo of the book last year because there was too much else going on. But I really like the book which is beautifully illustrated by @ollycostello.bsky.social - www.haymarketbooks.org/books/2588-p...
