Supt. Su continues by explaining that parents can consult with their school's counselor to make the best decision about opting out of Math 8.  Some Commissioners refer to the process as "informed consent" but worry about making sure parents are well informed.

Supt. Alexander also mentions the recommendation from Middle School teachers was for students to take Algebra 1 *and* Math 8 but the adopted policy was to make Math 8 optional. Supt. Su responds that this was requested by many families who believed their child was ready.

Supt. Alexander asks about the Professors mentioning entrance to high schools with entrance exams like Lowell. Professors say students who took Algebra and Math 8 had a better overall math improvement which would give them a better chance of passing entrance exams.

Stanford University Professors present the results of the testing in School years 24-25 and 25-26. Different approaches were tested, each of which has tradeoffs. Some approaches ask parents to choose while others use automatic enrollment, with implications for equity.

Supt. Su announces a revised math placement policy option that will bring back Algebra 1 in all middle schools and K8 schools starting in 26-27. Su mentioned that previous efforts had some unintended consequences.

Curriculum and Instruction staff has been meeting regularly with principals and assistant principals. Identifying enabling conditions at sites through site implementation tracking. They encourage school site staff to use planning journal and other techniques.

Board Pres. Kim introduces Item E Goal 2: eighth grade math. Staff presents statistics based on Star Math testing. They mention “mixed results” and a dip in scores from Fall to Winter. The current 8th grade math score is 44% out of a goal of 55% for this school year.
